4 YEARS 4 CHAMPIONS

Will Cold Hawaii see a new champion crowned for the fifth successive year?

With the next edition of the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup just a few days away we take a look at the previous four champions and whether there will be another new name at the top of the podium come the end of the week.

So far Klitmoeller has produced a new champion for each of the past four years. Here’s a run down of who has reigned supreme until now:

2010

During the first ever KIA Cold Hawaii World Cup, Brazil’s Kauli Seadi (JP / Hot Sails Maui) became the first man to tame the ferocious North Sea, after putting a stop to Victor Fernandez’s heroic comeback through the double elimination, which saw the Spaniard win ten heats in a row, only to fall at the final hurdle as Seadi remained composed

2011

A new year, a new champion, and not just of Cold Hawaii, as Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) produced a simply amazing display to fight his way back from third in the single after defeating Victor Fernandez followed by Ricardo Campello (Patrik / Point-7 / MFC), whom he had to beat twice to seal the crown. 2011 will live long in the memory of the then seventeen year old as Cold Hawaii is the destination where he was crowned PWA Wave World Champion for the first time in his career.

2012

Enter the fray Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails) as another battle for the title went down to the wire in Denmark. The Frenchman excelled in the howling winds and big, powerful waves in the single elimination to keep Victor Fernandez at bay, before giving a lesson in float and ride to defeat Philip Köster during the super final. Success against the German marked a momentous occasion for Traversa as he claimed his first ever victory on the PWA World Tour.

2013

Cold Hawaii left it late to provide the goods in 2014 as the event boiled down to an enthralling final day, but it was certainly worth the wait as a new champion was crowned for the fourth successive year in the shape of Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC). Victory in Denmark marked Brawzinho’s first ever triumph on the PWA Wave World Tour, but it also marked much more than this, as Cold Hawaii threw the title race on its head. Just a couple of months after his success in Cold Hawaii, Browne wasn’t just left reflecting on his maiden wave event victory, but celebrating being crowned the champion of the world too after a great performance in Maui. The Brazilian maestro will be heading back to Klitmoeller with fond memories.

Can one of the previous champions stamp their authority over the North Sea to edge ahead as the true king of Cold Hawaii or will a new name emerge at the top from the likes of Victor Fernandez - who currently leads the title race - Ricardo Campello, Jaeger Stone (SSD / Severne), Klaas Voget or perhaps Alex Mussolini (Tabou / GA Sails). The list goes on, but there’s only one way to find out who will come out on top and that’s by tuning into www.pwaworldtour.com from the 15th September until the 21st September.
