Dunkerbeck-Eyewear Siam Park Tenerife PWA World Cup

Event Summary: Tenerife delivers again as Philip Köster and Daida Moreno are crowned the champions

For the fourth successive year El Médano delivered fantastic wind and waves for the 2014 Dunkerbeck-Eyewear Siam Park Tenerife PWA World Cup as the elite of the wave sailing world delivered an enthralling show. By the end of a fascinating week, which saw a nail biting conclusion to both the men’s and women’s divisions as two super finals were required to decide the overall victor. In the end Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Daida Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) claimed the prestigious honour of being crowned the champions of El Médano.

Men’s

Philip Köster continued his dominance of El Cabezo as he upheld his unbeaten record, which now spans an incredible four years. The German, who is looking to regain his PWA wave world title, looked backed to his brilliant best, but was still pushed all the way by Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails). However, Köster found the additional gear which was required to succeed as he claimed he continued his dominance of Tenerife to move back up to second overall in the world - keeping his title aspirations alive.

Philip Köster back on top of the prestigious podium:

“I didn’t land my double planing, but it was a good one and a solid start to the heat, I also got my best wave of the contest in the super final so I was super happy. It feels great to win again and I’m super stoked.”

Just behind him was Thomas Traversa (Tabou / GA Sails), who defeated Köster once, but wasn’t quite able to beat the formidable German two times in a row. Throughout the week TT wowed both the crowd and the judges with his understanding and execution of his waves, which some compared to riding a wave, like a snooker player controls a cue ball, such was his control and understanding. Traversa, also excelled in the air as he landed stalled, tabletop forwards and double forwards. Unfortunately for the Frenchman he was unable to pull another double forward out the bag in the super final, which ultimately made the difference.

Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North / MFC) fought his was back through the double elimination to claim the final place on the heralded podium, as he continued his brilliant start to the season. However, things could’ve been even better for the Spaniard, but for an interference versus Traversa, which saw him lose his highest wave score. Without the interference Fernandez would’ve secured at least second place, but third still represents a solid display. On the penultimate day the 2010 world champion was in a world of his own, as he earned perfect tens from the judges for his incredible wave riding. Many of the pros and locals believe that his evening display on day four is the best they have ever seen El Cabezo sailed, and he may be slightly disappointed that the competition was not completed in those same conditions. However, Fernandez still leads the overall world rankings at this stage as he goes in search of his first world title since 2010.

Jaeger Stone (SSD / Severne) continued his empathic return to the world stage as he impressed with some of the most aggressive, and vertical, turns of the week to claim fourth place overall. The Australian came agonisingly close to securing a place on the podium, but just lost out to Victor Fernandez in heat 33, after the Spaniard stomped a double forward in the latter stages. Stone, however, has already sent out a major warning signal to his rivals, that he will be an even bigger threat in events to come.

Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Simmer / MFC) completed the top five with another accomplished display. The German delivered some of the best wave riding of the week, with vertical, powerful gauges and frontside airs to move up to fourth overall in the world rankings.

Event organiser - Dany Bruch (Starboard / Challenger / AL360) - earned his best result since 2012 as he claimed sixth place overall, which sees the German rise to seventh in the world rankings. Bruch is renowned for his fluid, effortless wave riding and he was able to showcase that time-and-time again at his home break to see off many of his rivals. Bruch will now be looking to continue his fine form at the next event in Klitmoeller, Cold Hawaii, Denmark.

Alex Mussolini (Tabou / GA Sails) and Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde) share joint seventh in the second event of the year. Both sailors excelled at times with Mussolini landing huge one-handed, one-footed forwards plus trademark frontside wave 360s, whilst Jamaer busted out massive no-handed backloops and powerful wave riding, but were stopped in their tracks by Victor Fernandez and Dany Bruch respectively.

Completing the top ten was Robby Swift (JP / NeilPryde / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins), Omar Sanchez (Patrik / Loft Sails / Dunkerbeck Eyewear), Moritz Mauch (Starboard / Severne / MFC) - who delivered some of the most stylish wave riding as he took down both Ricardo Campello (Patrik / Point-7 / MFC) and John Skye (RRD / RRD / MFC) - and reigning world champion Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC).

Women’s

Daida Moreno made it two event victories out of two as the reigning world champion dug deep to steal the event title from the arms of Iballa Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins), by forcing a super final, which she went on to win after landing a superb one-handed backloop and demonstrating aggressive and vertical riding in the waves.

Daida Moreno makes it two out of two:

“Today has been amazing for me. I had a lot of fun sailing and I felt great out there. The wind was good, the waves were good and I just went with the flow, trying to have fun and forget about the nerves. I was pretty calm - I used the tactic of trying to make sure I got a jump in the bag at the beginning. After I got my jump done I just focused on my wave riding. Before the final I changed up, which I’m really happy about because it let me go more vertical in my turns. I love this spot and I think I proved myself as a wave rider as well. I’m super happy to win here again.”

Iballa Moreno eventually had to settle for second place. The 2012 world champion looked in formidable form in the single elimination as she claimed victory in the single elimination, but looked slightly out of sorts as she tried to defend her crown. Admittedly, Iballa had been suffering from a wrist injury sustained in Pozo, but that will not ease the hurt of defeat for the fiercely competitive, legendary twin.

Best known for her prowess in freestyle - Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins) - laid down the gauntlet in the waves this week as she won seven successive heats in the double elimination to climb into the illustrious top three for the first in the waves, whilst sending out a warning to signal to her fellow rivals.

Amanda Beenen (Tabou / GA Sails) eventually finished fourth overall and was visibly disappointed at losing her podium position from the single elimination, but the Dutch girl still impressed with her aggressive wave riding and stylish forward loops. Attention will now turn to the next event in Sylt as she looks to move into the overall top three - currently sitting fourth.

Steffi Wahl (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) completes the top five this time around, having finished third in the opening event of the year. The German once again demonstrated her smooth, and fluid style on the wave, but just lost out to Amanda Beenen in the single elimination, before a relentless Sarah-Quita Offringa proved too much in the double. However, Wahl still occupies third overall and she’ll be a major threat again in Sylt.
