Nik Baker has been enjoying a fantastic year on the PWA world tour and currently is sitting in overall second in freestyle and third in waves. We caught up with Nik for the following chat at the end of the PWA Sylt Grand Slam.

Rain was the alarm call this morning but by the time skippers meeting was underway for the wave sailors at 10 a.m. the skies had cleared. The swell was similar to yesterday, so almost enough for wave competition were it not for a distinct lack of wind.

Another different picture greeted the sailors this morning at the 8.30 skippers meeting. The swell has increased but last nights strong winds have backed off just too much to put the wave sailors on the water.

The third day of competition here in the resort town of Westerland began quietly with a 5-knot onshore breeze keeping racers and wave sailors on the shore and relaxing in the hospitality tent.

The day started with glorious sunshine, and light northeasterly breeze. Most likely a racing day. Many competitors busied themselves with essential repairs after yesterday’s heavy conditions took their toll on the Formula equipment.

The day started with a torrential downpour, followed by 4 hours of warm sunshine and light northeasterly winds. Stark contrast to the ominous weather forecast which predicted bft 5 to 7 increasing to storm force 10!!!

Q: When did you enter your first PWA world cup?

JC: Five years ago, here in Gran Canaria when I was 15 years old.

Q: Do you enjoy competing in the big PWA events?

JC: Yes I do, for sure. This is my dream since I was 9 years old.
