Inside Line: Josh Angulo
Want to be able to crank a top turn like Mr. Angulo? Then read on…
After Brazilian, Kauli Seadi (JP, NeilPryde, Mormaii, MFC), explained the dynamics of the bottom turn, the torrent of emails requesting a certain PWA wave star to give a break down of the top turn, meant it wasn’t a hard decision choosing who to explain this powerful transition.
We hand over to the one of the most vertical wave sailors on the PWA World Tour tour; the 2007 king of Ponta Preta, and 4th ranked overall finisher on the 2008 PWA Wave Tour, Josh Angulo.
JA: "The beauty of the top turn is the exhilaration it gives, in any type of conditions, for sailors of any level. What is basically a simple change in direction is actually each windsurfers right to deliver their own artistic style and freedom on a wave.
Depending where I'm sailing and what's going on, I'll approach a top turn differently, but I would say the ultimate top turn for me would be at a good day at Ponta Preta. The wave at Ponta Preta plays out as a " liquid halfpipe", it's more or less always in the same place, and is as smooth as a Tony Hawk skate ramp.
When heading into a classic Ponta Preta top turn, you usually have so much speed and such an open wall that you can lay it on rail however you feel. The trick at Ponta Preta is handling the speed that the wave produces, combined with the offshore wind, so I try and get my board into the area right near the breaking lip, and start carving my cutback. While carving I usually start leaning real far forward which makes the front part of the rail dig in and this radical change in direction and speed causes for some major "g" forces and spray which result in that exhilaration I was talking about.
This same approach can be taken into 2 foot side to side -on, you just have to apply simple sail and body adjustments at various spots, and for various conditions. The main thing is, have a dig!
Our thanks to Josh for talking us through that one. Josh Angulo is sponsored by MauiSails and Dakine.
Thanks also to all those people that emailed in requesting Josh’s help. If you want to ask one of the PWA stars a question, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject titled ‘INSIDE LINE’. Remember to include your question(s) and who you’d like to answer them.
