Win Like A Pro

If you want to win a contest, it might be worth taking these tips on board.

Some of the PWA’s top wave sailors reveal the most important things they do in order to climb the elimination ladder and make it into the final few.

We asked a bunch of the World’s top wave sailors what the most important thing they do at a contest is. This is what they said:

Josh Angulo (Angulo, MauSails, Dakine)

Sleep, I sometimes have difficulty sleeping in new places and different beds. I’m always a bit too amped, so I try and make sure I get to bed early and sleep through the night. Sleep is key for me.”

Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, Dakine)

“Show up! Just getting there is half the battle. Making sure your gear is tuned, you’re healthy, and fired up and ready to compete!”

Klaas Voget (Fanatic, NeilPryde, MFC)

“The timing. Having everything prepared in time and having the timing for the heats is important to stay calm and focused. During the heats it’s the tack. This move is really important to change directions quickly and to get upwind.”

Kauli Seadi (JP, NeilPryde, MFC, Mormaii)

“Have the correct equipment for the conditions, and be physically and mentally prepared.”

Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, North, MFC)

“I try to have all my equipment set up, and myself set up. I try to eat well and sleep well in order to have the maximum amount of energy during the week of the competition.”

Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde)

“The most important thing is filling up your score sheet. No matter how amazing your jumps and rides are, if you don't get the right amount of jumps and waves, you’re going to lose.”

So, a bit of sleep, a few good meals, make sure you’re in the right place, and that you can tack, impress the judges, and you’re away!
