Fresh Focus For The Slalom And Freestyle Fleets

After the recent AGM there are some crucial developments to be aware of for the future.

Freestyle Format

Following on from the Freestyle meeting held at Sylt, PWA Freestyle contests will now be run primarily on a “Best Moves” format.

In the new system, riders will perform to a maximum number of moves. The judges will then score them on only their best moves.

For example, the head judge may specify a maximum of 12 moves in the heat, of which the best 8 will count.

With some scoresheets showing over 30 tricks per rider it's hoped competitors will have a better chance to perform their biggest moves rather than just the safest 'banker' tricks. The limit should also allow the judges to focus more accurately on each rider.

The more traditional format may still be run if necessary, but in general, the new set-up will always take precedence.

Slalom Rules

The PWA Board recently voted to keep the maximum number of races at Slalom events at 15. But, there will be a third discard introduced after 13 races. It was also stated clearly that 15 races is a “maximum” and not a ‘Target’ that Race Directors would be encouraged to try and reach.

There's been much discussion surrounding the number of boards and sails to be used on the PWA Slalom circuit. For 2008, the system will stay the same with all sailors registering 4 sails and 2 boards for each individual event.

But, to help limit the amount of equipment that competitors need to travel with, a new system will be implemented for 2009 whereby all sailors register 6 sails and 3 boards at their first event of the year.

And don’t forget the Joker

Competitors will also be allowed to play a “Joker” at any one event of their choosing, at which they will be allowed to register one additional board and sail for that event only.
