Kauli Hits Up The Cape

Scoring uncrowded lineups and pumping swell, Kauli Seadi reports on his training from Cabo Verde.

The consummate professional, multiple Wave World Champion Kauli Seadi has been getting himself dialed into the Cabo Verde conditions ahead of the forthcoming Wave World Cup (14th – 21st). As the pros slowly start to arrive on the island of Sal, the iconic Brazilian wave guru already has tales for 100 wave days and classic Cabo Verde down the line action. He reports:

“Now it’s time for the first event of PWA tour in Cabo Verde, the homeland of our friend Josh Angulo. I’ve been here since the 30th (Jan) and it’s been on fire every day.  This place has so many options of waves to ride, from big to small and easy to hardcore!

My first two days were in Alibaba, that place has nice, long rides over a super shallow reef. Then I spent some other days in Ponta Preta after the swell had shifted more to the west. For my luck, my friend Brendan Pyatt showed up on the morning of the 31st to capture every single wave on film from those amazing days, so soon we will be able to see all of these sessions in his new Umi DVD.

So far it’s been an epic of 100 wave rides a day, just amazing, and each wave is about 1 min long. After each day I’ve been completely dead and ready to go to bed. Now some pros have started to arrive, like my friend Brawzinho, Ricardo and Danny Bruch.  The waves have dropped today, but it looks like the swell will be really big again on Friday, Tudo de Bom e até!”

Recreating the stir he caused with the unveiling of his twinser boards back in 2007, it looks like Seadi is continuing to push the boundaries of R&D with the use of prototype quad fin boards in 2009 (see photo). At present it’s unknown if he’ll be using the super short (210cm) quads in competition, but reports from Josh Angulo suggest he’s getting them to work pretty well.
