It was all smiles today for Aussie Formula racing specialist Steve Allen here on the closing day of the Windsurfing ERA, PWA Formula Racing World Cup. Allen continued his domination of the event after placing 2nd and 1st in the final two races, which were held this afternoon in gusty offshore conditions. American sailor, Micah Buzianis (Mistral, North) won the opening race and moved up into second overall at the expense of Polish windsurfing legend Wojtek Brzozowski (Neil Pryde, Starboard). Dorota Staszewska (Neil Pryde, Starboard) was the clear winner of the women’s racing here in Poland after winning nine out of the twelve races.

STEVE ALLEN
“I am stoked. This is almost too good to be true! To be in front of so many top sailors is a dream for me. Tonight I am going to party a little but have to get on the road tomorrow for another event.”

Today’s races were held in light offshore winds gusting between 8 and 11 knots. Holding down his 10.9m sail, Micah Buzianis stormed off the line in race one ahead of the fleet and hit the upwind mark with a decisive lead. The battle for second between Steve Allen and Antoine Albeau developed into a major dogfight but once again Allen’s mastery of light wind tactics prevailed and he crossed the finish line with a clear margin.

In race two Steve Allen sealed the deal with his 6th bullet of the event after he continued to exert his authority in the light wind conditions. Ross Williams (Gaastra, AHD) finished the event in style after clinching second place ahead of Sam Ireland (North, Starboard of Canada. Polish windsurfing hero, Wotjek Brzozowski had a disastrous final two races and only managed 34th and 13th placings leaving the door wide open for Buzianis to slide into the second podium position.

MICAH BUZIANIS
“I am pretty stoked to move up a spot on the last day. I have been sitting in third and fourth the whole event and had a couple of guys coming up on my heels. I am driving tonight after the party so I can’t really drink. I have been in Europe a long time so I am ready to head back home to Maui. It has been an excellent event for the PWA return to racing. We have had some outstanding racing. Today was a little bit marginal at times but it was kind of fun tactical racing”

WOJTEK BRZOZOWSKI
“I have been doing everything I can to win. I did my absolute best and am happy with my efforts. In general I am very satisfied, I had a bad day today but still finished in the top three. This is a dream for me and I am content with that. I love it here…the people on the beach are very passionate, the girls are beautiful and the beach is superb. It is a great place for windsurfing. As I am Polish I have to invite everybody here to try windsurfing because this is the place to be. The beach party tonight is going to be wild because all the girls are just coming for the windsurfers!”

Lucy Horwood (Gaastra, AHD) of England won the only women’s race of the day although her efforts were too late to make any impact at the top of the leader board. Dorota Staszewska of Poland has dominated here in Poland and her place at the top has never really looked to be under serious threat.

DOROTA STASZEWSKA
“It was very important for me to win here because of all the spectators and media coverage. The people here really believe in me and Wojtek so I am glad that I won and he got third. I am very happy that so many people came here and Leba proved to an excellent race venue with great conditions. I am just proud!”

The PWA’s return to Formula Racing here in Poland has proven to be an outstanding success. Tonight the event will no doubt draw to a conclusion in style. A major beach party is scheduled to kick off after the closing ceremony and according to Wojtek, “It’s going to be wild!”

PHIL McGAIN- PWA CHAIRMAN
“I think the event went extremely well. We had more races than we could possibly imagine in a four-day regatta with top class organization both on and off the water. We had a great variety of conditions. The event has been what Formula racing is all about, so I think it was a big success. This should be the platform for more PWA formula racing events in the near future”
