Interview With Robby Swift

Q: How has the tour gone for you so far this year?

RS: Pretty good so far! I have done better than I had expected, and I would be more than happy if I can maintain my current position!!!

Q: Can you make the overall podium placings if you do well in Bonaire?

RS: Theoretically I could, but I would need to finish on the podium there and some of the better freestylers would need to finish out of the top 5. It is possible, but I don't want to get my hopes up too high!

Q: Do you have any new moves up your sleeve or are you just perfecting the old ones?

RS: I don’t really have anything new, I have a few variations of the old ones, but if I could get them all perfect, then I think that I would have a pretty good chance.

Q: Where is home for you these days?

RS: I still live in the UK, but I am spending the winter out here in Maui and I am hoping to spend more and more time here, as I get older.

Q: Describe a typical day in the life for you when you are on Maui.

RS: Normally I get up about 6.30 and go for surf or play golf! Then at 9.00 I go to the gym at Scott's and then between 11 and 1 p.m. I go sailing for a few hours. I normally do a bit of Freestyle and a bit of waves every day, but sometimes there just isn't time.

Q: How much fitter and stronger are you feeling since you joined MPG?

RS: I feel much stronger, and much fitter. We do specific training for each event, so for Pozo where you need to be really strong, we do quite a lot of weights and for Bonaire, we have been doing a lot more cardiovascular work. I definitely perform a lot better in the competitions now.

Q: What are your goals for next season?

<PHOTO3>

RS: I would like to stay in the top 5 of the Freestyle if possible and improve my wave position as well.

Q: What other sailors inspire you the most and why?

RS: All the good ones, from the great competition sailors like Bjorn and Kevin to the really stylish ones like Francisco and Levi. Jason Polakow sails unbelievably and so does Kauli Seadi. There are hundreds, but those are the ones that come to mind first!

Q: Has Maui been firing lately?

RS: Yep! I have been surfing, wave sailing, freestyling and even kite surfing!!! I have had my fair share of rock garden action too!

Q: Three words to describe yourself?

RS: Blond, Heterosexual, And Male.

Q: Words to live by?

RS: Don’t worry about doing anything! It is better to regret doing something than wish you had tried it!!!
