PWA TENERIFE WORLD CUP
The second stop of the Canaries tour saw the howling winds continue as the 2012 PWA Planet Win 365 Tenerife World Cup was completed in the opening four days as epic conditions blessed the shores of El Cabezo. After an enthralling competition Philip Köster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) and Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) reigned victorious. Both sailors delivered a truly world class performance as they made it two event wins out of two on the 2012 PWA Wave Tour.
Philip Köster won the single elimination ahead of Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North) with an incredible display. Köster landed monster wave 360s, takas and one handed goiters on the same wave as the wonderkid sailed in a league of his own. When the time came for Köster to defend his single elimination victory in the double elimination he would be up against an on fire Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra). The Spaniard’s wave sailing was without doubt the best of the entire competition as he surged past his opponents on the way to second place overall. Mussolini took down: - John Skye (RRD / Mystic / MFC), Thomas Traversa (Tabou / Gaastra), Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL360), Ricardo Campello (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) and finally Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North).
Unfortunately for Mussolini, defeating Köster proved to be a step too far on this occasion, despite winning the wave riding battle, which included an astonishing wave consisting of a massive wave 360 followed by a super vertical frontside smack and a sick taka. Köster’s wave riding in the single elimination had been outstanding but in the double elimination winners’ final it was the eighteen year old's jumping repertoire that really separated the two sailors. In his opening two jumps Köster landed a flawless trademark double forward before unleashing a devastating pushloop forward, which left the judges and the crowds amazed by what they had witnessed. Köster’s jumping performance saw him awarded twenty-three out of a possible twenty-four points and he went onto win the winners’ final, which means he has now won the last five PWA Wave events in a row as he continues his seemingly invincible form.
Philip Köster speaking after his event victory:
“I’m super stoked with the win, especially since Alex Mussolini was absolutely on fire today. I tried the triple and I really want to do it, hopefully we get the same conditions as last year in Denmark and I can pull it off!”
Other standout performances from the men’s division include; Adam Lewis (Patrik / Point-7) who achieved his first top ten finish. Lewis combined massive wave 360s with monstrous backloops to claim his best result ever. Ricardo Campello fought off a bout of food poisoning to finish in fourth place, which is a fine recovery after his disappointment of Pozo. John Skye was the highest finishing Brit as he managed to fight his way back from the first round of the double elimination to finish in seventh overall. Scott McKercher (Starboard / Severne) rolled back the years to finish in joint ninth, after showing some of the younger kids a thing or two about wave sailing.
Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) fought back from the death by defeating Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) in the double elimination, after Daida had won the single elimination. Just like in Pozo, Iballa left it until the final moments to strike and snatch the victory from under her sister's nose. In the winners’ final Iballa pulled a sensational goiter to turn the tie on it’s head. This forced a super final between the two Moreno twins, in the end the super final went the way of Iballa as she managed to defeat her sister for the second time in a row and in so doing she remains at the top of the rankings. On her way to victory Iballa delivered an outstanding pushloop as well as some stand out wave riding which included a fantastic frontside air. Meanwhile, Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne), held off the challenge of Laure Treboux (Fanatic / North) to claim her place on the podium once more. Jaggi used her wealth of experience to land brilliant pushloops and backloops to clinch the battle for third.
Iballa Ruano Moreno speaking after her back-to-back victories:
“I don’t know what’s going on because I managed to pull a big move in the last minute again, I’m stoked although I think I was a little bit lucky. I never though that I would manage to beat Daida twice, and I am super happy to win two events in a row for the first time in my life.”
Steffi Wahl (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) followed up her fourth place finish in Pozo with an excellent fifth. The German demonstrated more of her super fluid wave riding to wow the judges. Unfortunately Eva Oude Ophius (Fanatic / North) suffered an injury to her back/neck after a flat forward loop landing, everyone involved with the PWA would like to with Eva a quick recovery and we hope to see her back out on the water ripping soon.
The PWA will be heading straight to Fuerteventura as the PWA Slalom and Freestyle World Tours congregate on the shores of Sotavento between the 20th and 30th July for ten days of epic action.
