PWA TENERIFE WORLD CUP

Event Summary: Tenerife delivers fantastic conditions for the third successive year

The PWA Tenerife World Cup proved to be a huge success once more as El Medano delivered winds of up to 40 knots and big, powerful waves for the third successive year. At the end of an enthralling week of competition Philip Köster (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) and Daida Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) were rewarded for their outstanding displays as they were crowned the King and Queen of Tenerife, after successfully defending their single elimination titles.

Men’s

Single Elimination

Winners’ Final

Philip Köster recovered from a slower than usual start in the opening winners’ final of the week  - on day three - to defeat Alex Mussolini (Tabou / Gaastra). The Spaniard initially led in the final after a couple of brilliant early waves consisting of a radical frontside 360 and two super smooth takas on separate waves. However, the reigning world champion responded with a fantastic wave of his own as he tweaked two frontside airs on the same wave. With confidence starting to return Köster then launched into one of his trademark ankle dry double forwards as well as a monstrous one-handed, one-footed backloop to move into the lead and from here he was never going to relinquish the victory. Mussolini landed a textbook one-handed, one-footed backloop of his own but it wasn’t enough to overcome Köster on this occasion.

Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North / MFC) agonizingly missed out on a place in the winners’ final by the narrowest of margins to Alex Mussolini. The two sailors finished their semifinal on equal points, but with Mussolini achieving the highest single wave it was he who advanced. However Fernandez quickly regrouped to claim his place on the podium after defeating Thomas Traversa (Tabou / Gaastra).

Double Elimination

Victor Fernandez (Fanatic / North / MFC) was in inspired form in the double elimination as he unleashed a combination of devastating wave riding and gravity defying jumping to fight back from third in the single elimination. The Spaniard first put an end to Ricardo Campello’s (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) fight back to defend third place, before exacting revenge against Alex Mussolini to earn his place in the winners’ final.

Winners’ Final

With Fernandez having accumulated the highest score of the day thus far - 34 points - Philip Köster knew that he would have to be at his best to defeat his long time rival, and the two-time world champion didn’t disappoint, as he delivered a spectacular performance to earn not only the highest score of the day, but also of the week with 35.43 points. Fernandez made a strong start to the final as he continued to show brilliant wave selection, which he combined with more super fluid riding. In the air the Spaniard unleashed a monstrous double forward right in front of Köster, only for the German to respond with an astonishing stalled double forward and an amazing one-handed, one-footed backloop. With two brilliant jumps on the score board the nineteen year old then set about destroying the waves. The wonderkid found the perfect section for a huge frontside wave 360 off the lip before carving straight into a super smooth taka to ensure the victory belonged to him.

Words from the Winner Philip Köster:

“I saw Victor's big double and with it being the final I knew I had to go big, especially because Victor was sailing so well. I wanted to go for a pushloop forward but I couldn't find the right ramp for it, but I was really happy with my stalled forward, I went higher than I was expecting and I'm really stoked to win the event.”

Leon Jamaer (Fanatic / Hot Sails Maui) produced a spectacular fight back in the double elimination as he earned his best finish to date on the PWA World Tour - seventh. The German won four successive heats with is powerful wave riding and huge tweaked pushloops impressing both the crowds and the judges. On his way to seventh place Jamaer defeated Moritz Mauch (Starboard / North) - who won the junior’s competition - Aleix Sanllehy (Goya Windsurfing / MFC), before defeating former world champion Scott McKercher (Starboard / Severne) and finally local boy Dany Bruch (Starboard / Severne / AL360) by the narrowest of margins. Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) prevented the German from going any further but he will still be delighted with his weeks work.

Elsewhere, Jamie Hancock (Tabou / Gaastra) also staged a rampaging comeback through the double elimination as the he won three heats in a row to earn himself a place in the top ten. The Brit first defeated Jonas Ceballos before also dispatching of Klaas Voget (Fanatic / Simmer / MFC) and Dario Ojeda (Tabou / Gaastra / MFC) with superior wave riding, before John Skye (RRD / MFC) ended his fightback. Skye eventually ended the event in seventh place with fellow Brit Adam Lewis (Patrik / Point-7) also finishing inside the top ten.

Women’s

The familiar pairing of Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) and Daida Ruano Moreno once again lined up for another all Moreno final. Just like last year in Tenerife Daida came out on top in the single elimination winners’ final only to see Iballa fight back in the double to force a nerve-wracking super final. However, history didn’t repeat itself this time around as Daida Moreno dug deep to hold off the challenge of her sister and in doing so Daida claimed her first event victory since July 2011. On her way to the top of the podium Daida showed her prowess in the air as she rotated through a beautifully controlled backloop, before unleashing a huge stalled forward. In the super final Daida also showed better wave selection than in the previous heat and this proved critical as she was able deliver several, powerful front and backside slashes. Iballa had her moments in the super final too as she tweaked a frontside air on a superb wave, but it wasn’t enough to defend her Tenerife crown.

Daida Ruano Moreno speaking after claiming victory:

“I knew against Iballa I just had to go higher and more powerful. You all saw what Iballa can do in the final. In the warmup I damaged my 74ltr board and had to take a smaller board in the final, which made things a bit more difficult, but overall I'm super stoked. Also I’d like to thank all our sponsors as without them it wouldn't be possible for us to do what we are doing!”

Karin Jaggi defended her place on the podium after seeing off Steffi Wahl (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg) in the battle for third and fourth. Jaggi shone both on the wave and in the air as she landed a fantastic pushloop and several fluid waves. Even the highest scoring wave the heat from Wahl  - in the dying seconds - wasn’t enough to force her way into the top three.

Nayra Alonso finished in fifth place overall in her first event back on the PWA World Tour after becoming a mother for the first time last year. Alonso grew in confidence throughout the week and her unquestionable style on the wave caught the eye of the judges time and time again and she’ll be a major threat in the next event.

Wave of the Week

Iballa Ruano Moreno (Starboard / Severne) produced the wave of the week in heat thirty-four against Karin Jaggi (Patrik / Severne) as she delivered a gauging frontside hit in the critical section of the wave with three additional vertical frontside snaps to earn perfect tens from the judges.
