Netherlands. That’s right after a fifteen year absence from the PWA World Tour the most gifted freestylers in the world shall be returning to the shores of the Netherlands - Brouwersdam to be more precise - between the 8th until the 14th of September, where they will compete at the Sail and Surfcentre Brouwersdam which has been in existence since 1993.
Brouwersdam is a dam spanning 6.5 kilometers between the North Sea and Grevelingen Lake, situated in Southern Holland, just over an hours drive from the Metropolitan city of Amsterdam. Brouwersdman is the seventh construction of the famous Delta Works - more information can be found here.
Brouwersdam has grown in popularity over the years thanks to it’s fantastic location, reliable winds and its now famous ‘poeltje’ meaning little pool, which has seen Brouwersdam earn the reputation of being one of the best freestyle spots in the world due to it’s mirror flat, shallow water, which make this an ideal spot for beginners and experts alike. Many of the stars competing on the PWA often frequent Brouwersdam with the likes of local heroes Dieter Van der Eyken (Starboard / Severne), Rick Jendrusch (F2 / Severne / Mystic), Davy Scheffers (Tabou / Gaastra) and of course the 2011 PWA Freestyle World Champion Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde / Different) all being regulars. Futhermore should the wind not blow there are a vast array of other activities to participate in such as sailing, Standup Paddleboarding (SUP) and cable-tow .
Note: The use of surf shoes is recommended due to mussels and oysters.
Prevailing southwesterly winds which regularly blow between 3 and 6 beaufort - 7-27 knots - with a combination of mirror flat water and small chop. The months of April to October are statistically the windiest periods.
DAM7 is the festival being held in association with the PWA in the Netherlands. Everything revolves around boardsports here; music, creativity and ultimate fun. Think action, relaxation, fun, amazing parties all combined with the beach. In short, the lifestyle that goes with boardsports!
