After a triumphant year on the international film festival circuit, the highly acclaimed 7-time award winning documentary “Children of the Wind” has just been released.  The film is now available for download on iTunes, and the DVD/Blu-ray can be purchased from the film’s website here. The DVD and Blu-ray has sub-title options in six languages: German, French, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, and Greek,  and will have special features not available through any other format including a highly acclaimed 40 minute short documentary “The Making of Children of the Wind”; “How Does Windsurfing Make You Feel?” montage featuring Robby Naish, Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne / Chris Benz / Dunkerbeck Eyewear), Antoine Albeau (RRD / NeilPryde) , the Moreno twins [Daida and Iballa (Starboard / Severne)], Andy “Bubble” Chambers (JP / NeilPryde), Kai Lenny, and many more; the full Robby Naish interview, two deleted scenes, and two music videos.

Children of the Wind centers on brothers Tonky Frans (Tabou / Gaastra) and Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins) and their cousin Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra) as they journey from poor fishing families on the tiny Caribbean island of Bonaire to become three of the best freestyle windsurfers in history. Set against the backdrop of the 2011 PWA Windsurfing World Cup on Bonaire, the film follows the boys over fifteen years as they transform not only their island but the face of the sport worldwide. Also feeding into the story is the role played by mentors Elvis Martinus and Patun Saragoza, the legacy of windsurfing on Bonaire, and the continuing emergence of the young Bonaire windsurfers of all ages dominating the ProKids World Championships and the PWA World Tour.  Currently, six of the top ten in the PWA world rankings in freestyle are from Bonaire.

“Children of the Wind” burst onto the festival circuit by winning the Audience Award at the Aruba International Film Festival in June of 2012, where it was the runaway hit of the festival and had five sold out screenings, three of them encores by demand.  COTW then went on to win three awards at the biggest sports action film festival in the world: the X-Dance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah.  There COTW took home honors as Best Documentary, Best Emerging Filmmaker—Daphne Schmon, and Best Original Score—Phillip Lober.  From there, COTW won “Best Documentary” awards in international film festivals across the U.S. and in the Caribbean, and received nominations as “Best Documentary” in several others, including a nomination with two other films for the CNN Prize at the American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach—the largest black film festival in the country. “Children of the Wind” will next screen at Urbanworld Film Festival, a major film festival in New York City in September, sponsored by BET Networks and HBO.
