SUPER SIX FOR SARAH

Perfection personified by Lady Sarah-Quita Offringa

When you think of perfection, there is no better example in the windsurfing world than the one and only Lady Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Gaastra / Mystic / Chris Benz / Maui Ultra Fins). The lady from Aruba holds the perfect record on the PWA Freestyle World Tour having been unbeaten  - or rather unbeatable - for an incredible six years, such is her dominance and true dedication to the sport. Of course a healthy sprinkling of natural talent helps as well. Having just claimed an amazing sixth PWA Freestyle World Championship - at the age of just twenty-two - we caught up with the lady who continues to set the perfect Royal example. Read the interview below:

PWA: Congratulations on your sixth PWA Freestyle World title, how are you feeling?

LSQ: “Thank you very much, It feels great. We had two events this year that were very different conditions wise so I’m very happy I could perform well at both events.”

PWA: You are unbeaten in freestyle for the last six years, do you still get nervous before your heats?

LSQ: “I always get nervous. But in a good way. I just always want to perform the best I can.”

PWA: Is your unbeaten record something you think about and want to protect?

LSQ: “I don’t really think about it actually. When I do though.. it’s pretty mind blowing to me. The fact that I haven’t lost a single heat in 6 years… I guess I will do my best to see how long I can stay on that winning streak :)”

PWA: How do you keep motivated when you are unbeaten for so long?

LSQ: “It’s hard to stay on top! Even more so now because I’m sure other riders want that first place really bad. That then also keeps me motivated. Because I’m not giving it away like that.”

PWA: Favourite moment on the tour this year?

LSQ: “Brouwersdam - Winning the single elimination on that super stormy day. And having friends and family over during the week and hear them cheering for me at the prize giving felt amazing.”

“And honestly. Sylt just now was great. Big congratulations to all the winners. But seeing Kiri [Thode] (Starboard / Gaastra) win his first title and seeing the younger guys Alberto Menegatti (Starboard / Point-7) and Julien Quentel (RRD / NeilPryde) finish in the top 3 in slalom was great!”

PWA: Earlier in the year we saw you register for a wave event, will we be seeing you at more wave events in the future?

LSQ: “Yes ! 2014 is the year.”

PWA: We also saw you make a winning return in the slalom in Turkey, do you train slalom? And could we see you trying to win your world title back in the future?

LSQ: “Yeah Turkey went really well for me. Better than expected. I haven’t trained slalom before this event. Just haven’t had the time. Hopefully next year when I finish my studies I will be able to compete on the whole slalom tour again. After the event in Turkey I’m very motivated to give that world title a shot again.”

PWA: What moves are you currently working on?

LSQ: “I’m looking to train the combo moves. Like spock culo’s but actually at the moment I want to focus on jumps in waves as well. I think it’s about time I should learn backloops and pushies.”

PWA: Favourite move?

LSQ: “Kono”

PWA: Move which took you the longest to learn, or felt the hardest to learn?

LSQ: “Shaka definitely took a really long time and I’ve been at those burners for a while.”

PWA: Favourite location(s) to sail?

LSQ: “Barcadera, Aruba. Sorobon, Bonaire. Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. Dahab, Egypt.”

PWA: How will you be spending your winter?

LSQ: “Probably studying in Holland but I’m planning on making 2 trips in between my semesters!”

PWA: Thanks Sarah and congratulations again on an incredible sixth PWA Freestyle World Championship. Good luck over the winter and we look forward to see you on the water in 2014.
