Kiri Thode armed and ready to start his PWA Freestyle title defence

With just two events to go Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North / MFC) was leading the PWA Freestyle World Tour and it looked for all the world that he would be going on to claim his sixth world crown. However, Kiri Thode (Starboard / Gaastra) had other ideas and he threw the title race wide open in Holland by clinching his first event victory since 2011. By the final event of the year in Sylt it was possible for either Thode, Estredo or Steven Van Broeckhoven (JP / NeilPryde) to come out on top. The wind firmly in his sail Thode produced another fantastic performance to be crowned the PWA Freestyle World Champion for the first time in his life.

Now eight months after his heroic victory the Bonairean is preparing himself to do it all again as he kicks off his title defence in his homeland of Bonaire in just a weeks time. Thode successfully won the last time the PWA were in town - 2011 - and he’ll be hoping he can repeat the same feat again as he goes in search of back-to-back world titles. Do you think Thode will come out on top?

With the first PWA Freestyle event of 2014 just around the corner we quickly caught up with Kiri to see how he’s feeling ahead of the season opener:

PWA: Hi Kiri, how has your winter training gone?

KT: “My winter training was smooth I was taking it easy on the water because the season was pretty long, but for sure I had some amazing time on the water here in Bonaire.”

PWA: Are you looking forward to the PWA returning to Bonaire, and what does it mean to have the event back?

KT: “I’m so happy that Bonaire is back on the map. I’m super excited and ready for it. :)”

PWA: And lastly how are you feeling about starting your title defence at your home spot?

KT: “Of course this time will be a good one, now we have some strong local sailor’s so all the other riders will have a hard time with them too. Let’s just see how it goes.”

The first PWA Freestyle event of the year begins on the 20th June until the 24th June. Don’t miss any of the explosive action by tuning into, where you’ll be able to the action live as it happens via the PWA live stream and live ticker. With just one week to go who’s your money on?
