Cold Water Sessions

How do you feel about facing the cold? Rick Jendrusch shares his outlook on cold water sailing

Last week we caught up with Steffi Wahl (Patrik / Sailloft Hamburg / SWOX) to find out her opinion on facing the cold, which you can see here if you haven’t already. Some people love the challenge of battling the cold, whilst others absolutely hate it and would rather not going sailing at all, so how does freestyle wiz kid - Rick Jendrusch (F2 / Severne / Mystic) - feel about heading out in freezing cold, wintery conditions?

PWA: How do you het motivated to go sailing when it’s freezing cold?

RJ: “Mostly these sessions are the better ones because there are not so many people on the water, just the die hards! Winds are also stronger in the winter so that’s a good argument to go.”

“Anyway its good to sail at home with some friend and just go out for a power hour and try to stay on the board!”

PWA: Do you follow a set preparation the night/morning before you go sailing? If so, what?

RJ: “As preparation I keep myself always warm before I go on the water, so stay as long as possible in warm clothes and as many clothes as possible haha. Before you go sailing in the cold you have to eat some good food because you lose your energy much quicker in the cold!”

PWA: Favourite music to get you pumped up before you go sailing?

RJ: “Just some good house music with pumping beats to be stoked for the session, mostly just in the car on the way to the beach!”

PWA: Warm up routine before you go sailing?

RJ: “Just a bit running and jumping on the beach or parking, haha just to stay warm and go warm on the water!”

PWA: Gloves or no gloves? Are boots allowed?

RJ: “I never wear gloves, better a shorter session and colder hands than gloves for me! But shoes yes, I always use shoes so that’s no a bid deal for me.”

PWA: Anything else you’d like to add Rick?

“Sailing in the cold is always better on the sea and not on a lake because the sea is warmer mostly! But you have to watch out that the conditions are safe. It’s dangerous when you are alone on the water with the cold conditions. I never go alone and I always let somebody know that I’m going out! Wear some good warm wetsuit, gloves and cap to stay warm. It’s safer on a lake, but mostly a bit colder. Go at midday if possible as it’s the warmest part of the day and the sun is out most of the time that makes it a bit more comfy ;).”

PWA: Thanks, Rick.
