Andrea Cucchi reveals the idea behind the new project for the dark side of windsurfing

Ten days ago Point-7 revealed their new look sails specifically aimed at the girls of the windsurfing world. Now we have caught up with the man behind Point-7 to find out where the idea began and the drive behind it. Read on to find out more:

PWA: Hi Andrea, when did this idea of having a sail specifically for girls begin?

AC: “I was a bit frustrated last year when Sarah-Quita [Offringa] was without a sponsor. A world champion which can't find a fair budget to accept a sponsorship? The fact that the girls use the same gear as the guys, makes it harder to understand the return on sale that a girl windsurfer can bring. So as there is a market for windsurfing girls, we thought that it could have been fun and interesting to develop it, and finally put a value to this work that the pro girls are doing. We thought that when the PWA had an event in Hyeres with only the women division, it was also a great thing. The girls were finally the main show to follow, and not hidden by the man action. Just like in skiing.”

“It exists in all sports that equipment is developed for the girls. There can be specific work that can be done to this which is not only colours, even if that can be an easy point to start from. From some years the gear can be developed to adapt better also to lighter and less powerful people. So now there is a real chance to make something exciting and more specific for the girls.”

PWA: Is that because Andrea is also a girls name in Germany ;-)?

AC: “Well we all have our hidden girl part inside us... Well I wish it would be only in Germany the name Andrea is for the girls. Would have been less teased about it when I was in school, and already around the world due to my parents business.”

PWA: This is a slalom sail, do you have any other sails designed for girls also?

AC: “We will have also a wave range, which is being released very soon, and the clothing is available in one week. We will add more and more..the girls are on fire.”

PWA: What is the main difference of the sail?

AC: “For now it is only colours which represent the #point7girls team lifestyle. It's a start to advertise the project, and start developing the sail from the base that we have. So we got our girls in Tenerife and we started putting down points for next editions. The geometry and the pressures are the main points that we will work on.”

PWA: Do you think girls are going to be faster now because they look cooler now?

AC: “You can bet on this. I was so happy to see them so excited when they were unrolling their sails. Motivation is making a difference in all of us, and when you have such a special sail, you can't go slower!”

PWA: Thanks, Andrea.
