Pro Slalom Stages

An update from Jordy Vonk on his and many of the world’s other top slalom sailors winter training

The Tenerife Windsurf Solution (TWS) Pro Slalom Stages for 2015 came to an end. After three months with superb conditions and only three days without wind the 41 riders who participated trained until they were exhausted. On the busiest day we had 21 riders sailing with us! The first year of the TWS Pro Slalom Stages has been a great success and we can already reveal that we’ll be organising the training in January, February and March 2016 again!

This winter has been amazing in terms of conditions, during the three months of training we had wind 95% of the days!  This made it possible to train the riders in high and low wind conditions - ranging anywhere 12 knots to more than 40! The most used sail sizes were between the 7.0m and 7.9m.

We had some big guns training with us, Matteo Iachino (Fanatic / North) (top 10 PWA), Vincent Langer (Fanatic / Point-7) (German Champion), Casper Bouman (Angulo / NeilPryde)(World Champion Formula), Maciek Rutkowski (Patrik / Point-7) (top 16 PWA), Lena Erdil (Patrik / Point-7 / Mystic / AL360) (PWA Vice-World champion 2014), plus many more top sailors! In the end 41 riders came from 13 different nations. After more than 400 starts we’re sure that they’re all ready for the 2015 season and can’t wait to see their results.

To give you an idea of how are winter went here’s the breakdown of what we did in numbers:

25 days of training

41 Sailors
13 Nationalities

7 Board brands represented
11 Sail brands represented
420 Races conducted

40 Port tack starts

380 Starboard tack starts

67 General recalls

21 Knots average wind

For our first year we’re proud to show you these numbers, we’ll keep improving to push our riders more and more.

Besides all the good training, sadly also something tragically happened in El Médano; Alberto Menegatti, one of the riders who took the initiative for the training and created the TWS Pro Slalom Stages training with us, passed away on the 23rd of February. Alberto was only 29 years old and was one of the fastest sailors on the course and a super friendly and much loved person as well as being a truly professional athlete.  We were, and still are, all shocked and sad with passing away of Alberto. We stopped training for a week out of respect for Alberto, family and friends.  Next year we will all push the training to the limit as Alberto would have done.

We would like to thank all riders that have been sailing with us and hope to see you back next year, we have some good ideas and initiatives and are sure we can lift the level even more!
