True Wind

Max Matissek combines windsurfing and art in his latest (under) groundbreaking project

Austrian freestyler Max Matissek (Fanatic / North) has just unveiled his brand new breathtaking project, which takes tow-in windsurfing to a new dimension. Matissek has always dreamed about being able to combine windsurfing with art - two of his biggest passions - and now he has been able to make that dream a reality. For find out more about True Wind we caught up with Max for an interview, which you can read below:

PWA: Can you tell us a little about your latest project?

MM: “Yes, of course, with pleasure! True Wind is my latest project series where I try to combine my two passions Windsurfing and Art.”

PWA: Where did the idea come from?

MM: “I always imagined to windsurf in places where it actually was impossible to because of simple physics and other stuff. In surroundings where nobody would expect a windsurfer to fly through. In True Wind I try to make these pictures I dreamed of a reality. The idea itself was already for many years in my mind, but I had to wait for the right moment. Now finally the time has come and I could make the first project which I am really happy about.”

PWA: Where was it based and how long did it take to film?

MM: “The first True Wind picture was shot under the streets of Vienna/Simmering in a new and massive rainwater reservoir.”

PWA: Was it scary being towed into a ramp?

MM: “In the beginning it was a bit scary, because we built the ramp exclusively for this project, and I couldn’t test it before. The ramp is pretty short and has a lot of curve to get more airtime. Also the surface was a prototype. I was not sure if i’ll make it over it or just get stuck from about 50kmh to 0. But then on the first try I slid over the sidewall of the ramp and accidentally almost landed a perfect pushloop haha. The kick definitely was alright.”

PWA: Any bad crashes?

MM: “Over the ramp actually not really as it was pretty slippery. You can feel the landings a bit in your knees, but that’s it actually. One time I crashed into one of the pillars and into a wall of the building, but without the ramp... that was really scary…"

PWA: When can we see the full thing and where?

MM: “You can see the full making of from now on, on my YouTube Channel here.”

PWA: Thanks Max.
