Girl on Wave

Sarah Hauser looks ahead to the NoveNove Maui Aloha Classic and tells us more about Girl on Wave

Sarah Hauser (Tabou / Simmer) was born and raised in New Caledonia, but now spends much of her time in the windsurfing Mecca of Maui, honing her skills in the powerful, world class waves Maui is renowned for. The twenty-three year old made her debut on the PWA World Tour at last year’s Maui Aloha Classic, finishing joint 9th, and impressed with her stylish approach and selection of the biggest set waves. Since last year Hauser has been working on a new project ‘Girl on Wave’  so we caught up with her to find out more:

PWA: Hey Sarah, can you tell us a little bit more about Girl on Wave and how you originally got into windsurfing?

SH: “I started windsurfing around 14 years old at home, in New Caledonia. I really got addicted when I rode my first wave on the outer-reef of Tenia. I promised myself that I would make a career out of it but my family wouldn’t let me choose such an uncertain path so young. I agreed that I would study before chasing my dream. So at 23 years old, right after I got my master degree in computer science and applied mathematics I took off for one month in Maui, the Mecca of wave sailing. I made it to the top 5 at the Maui Makani Classic, rode some big waves at Ho’okipa and got my first sponsors (Simmer Style and Tabou). Oh… and I also met the man of my life: my husband Casey Hauser! That was the beginning of my career.”

“Girl on Wave is sport documentary in production right now. It tells my story and documents my training here on Maui as well as my preparation for big waves and competitions. It also introduces the community I live with and what we do to inspire more people to go after their dreams and have a healthy goal oriented lifestyle.”

PWA: Where did the idea for the movie originally come from?

SH: “Last year, for 10 months I was working part time as a programmer/scientist. We had to shoot a promo video for the company and that’s how I met Steven Esparza who runs the movie production agency Echo House Films in Phoenix, Arizona. A couple months after I stopped working for the tech company, Steven called me and we decided to make a movie about my story and the people around me here on Maui.”

“It is a massive amount of work to plan the filming, coordinate people, look for sponsors, communicate about what we’re doing and also… be in front of the camera in heavy conditions sometimes! But the images we’re capturing are so beautiful, it is very rewarding. I hope we’ll make windsurfing “look cool” for an audience who doesn’t know about it!”

PWA: What are your favorite conditions to sail in?

SH: “I like big waves :)”

PWA: It’s almost time for this year’s Aloha Classic… are you looking forward to it? And what is your aim for the contest?

SH: “I’m super excited about the Aloha Classic. I’ve been training here on Maui since mid-August. We haven’t had much wind, but I love surfing and SUP. It always help to ride waves on different equipment.”

“Of course I’d love to achieve a good result but it won’t be easy. To me this is the hardest event of the year. The top ranked women are awesome windsurfers: the Moreno sisters, Sarah-Quita, Ingrid Larouche, Amanda Beenen… We also have former olympic champion Jessica Crisp, the talented Fiona Wylde, the kamikaze Vickey Abbott, the local Maui girls: Tiffany Ward, Tatiana Howard, Shawna Cropas… All these girls can make it to the final! It’s gonna be a very challenging event which is awesome for the sport of women’s windsurfing!”

PWA: We saw you last year competing in Maui and NC… would you like to attend some of the other events in the future too?

SH: “I’d love too! It’s only a matter of budget for me. There are so many competitions I’d like to go. Hopefully the movie Girl on Wave will help me get more sponsors so I can travel more to pursue my windsurfing career…”

PWA: Thanks, Sarah. Good luck in Maui and with Girl on Wave.
