A Year to Remember

Marco Lang on a narrow escape and his best performance to date

Marco Lang (Fanatic / North) was involved in a nasty collision with Enes Yilmazer (Starboard / Severne) in the final event of the year in New Caledonia, however, while that may have not been the way he wanted to end the season, 2015 was an excellent year for the Austrian after breaking into the world’s Top 20 for the first time in his career. After a near and a fine year we caught up with Marco for a quick interview:

Hey Marco, how are you doing after your injury in New Caledonia?

ML: I am already back since one week, and my arm is getting better slowly. I think I was a bit lucky,  that the result from the crash with Enes [Yilmazer] was just a big hematoma in my right arm, so nothing broken. Next week I can already start with my training for the upcoming season!”

Glad to hear it wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been!

It probably wasn’t the way you wanted to finish the year, but overall you must be delighted with your best season so far?

ML: “I definitely wasn’t happy with my result because I came to New Caledonia really motivated and on the back of good preparation, but the event didn’t start well for me and then in the end my crash with Enes Yilmazer ended the event for me.”

“On the flip-side… the overall ranking made me happy again. This was by far the best season for me and I know I have the potential to do even better in the coming years!”

At the start of the season what was your aim?

ML: “I didn’t really have a definite goal! I knew that I was in good shape to perform better compared to my previous years efforts because I trained quite hard in the winter and I could already see a slight improvement, but I didn’t expect this result!”

What do you think of the level on the slalom tour right now?

ML: “The level of the slalom on the tour is improving from year to year and in my opinion that’s really good for the sport. Everybody is pushing themselves to their limits, you have no chance anymore without any training. So there is just one option, train hard and 100% focus on windsurfing!”

If you had to pick one aspect of your sailing that has improved the most what would you say?

ML: "I think I could improve my overall racing skills but I know I still have few things to learn. For the upcoming training I know already what I need to focus on to improve again for the next season!”

How will you be spending the off season and goals for the year ahead?

ML: “I’ll do the same as last year. So in January and February I want to spend my time on Tenerife with the TWS Pro Slalom Training and then in March I will head to Maui for developing and testing!”

Thanks Marco and congratulations on a great year.
