Road to Recovery

Injury update with British freestyler Max Rowe

Earlier this winter Max Rowe suffered a broken ankle while freestyling in Maui. 9 weeks on we caught up with the Brit to see how his recovery is going. Rowe finished last season in 29th place, but in the prior 3 years had been a regular in the world’s top 16 and will be looking to bounce back when the new season begins later this year in May.

You broke your ankle earlier this winter in Maui — how are you now? And is that the longest you’ve been off the water?

MR: “I’m doing good, I've been out in Cape Town for the last two weeks and I'm just trying to really ease myself back into windsurfing whilst still focussing a lot on the gym and building the strength back up. Its been such a crazy windy season so far out here so that hasn't been easy. Yeh I'm pretty sure that is the longest I've been off the water in at least the last five years but still 8 weeks isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things.”

Have you ever suffered any other windsurf related injuries?

MR: “Apart from a few days maybe a week here or there I would say that is definitely my first real windsurfing injury. When I think about it like that it makes me feel very fortunate but also I need to consider that maybe I wasn't doing enough with my physical training that could of led to it happening in the first place. With that in mind now I really want to make sure I'm as fit as I can be to avoid missing out on having fun on the water.”

How did it feel to get back on the water?

MR: “It felt amazing! I couldn't stop smiling all day.”

Is your ankle back to full strength? And how is your confidence on the water?

MR: “No It's still just 9 weeks since the break so it's still not at "full" strength but it’s not far off now. As it was an impact injury I really feel it when I come down flat. My confidence is getting higher everyday with the more time I spend on the board, but it's definitely in the back of my mind that I really don't want to do anything stupid that would lead to a longer recovery.”

Thanks Max, glad to hear you are back on the water and all the best with the remainder of your recovery.
