The trip alone to the pristine beaches of this isolated chain of islands in the middle of the warm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence will be an adventure on its own. Several of the competitors will be embarking on a road trip which leaves Montreal on the 3rd of September and arrives on the islands on the 6th with stopovers planned in Quebec and anywhere else where the wind is up and the conditions are firing.

The Magdalen Islands or Îles de la Madeleine are an archipelago in the Gulf of St Lawrence in Canada, though closer to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia; the islands belong to Quebec province. There are nine major islands - Alright, Amherst, Brion, Coffin, East, Entry, Grindstone, Grosse, and Wolf as well as numerous other islets. Wild ocean sailing as well as flat-water lagoon speed sailing with winds from all directions should be enough to satisfy the appetites of all the competitors, with winds in the Magdalens predominantly blowing form the south west at this time of year, in the region of 9-22 knots.

After Daida Moreno (Mistral, North) demonstrated her absolute dominance in Women’s Freestyle winning every round at Pozo with a standard of sailing that is clear ahead of her closest competition she is now in a dominating position in the women’s freestyle rankings. Karin Jaggi (F2, Arrows) meanwhile, once again clung on to second ahead of a hard fighting Iballa Moreno (Mistral, North Sails) looking to reassert her own position in the freestyle hierarchy after missing out on the action in Fuerteventura. Fellow Spanish sailors, Nayra Alonso (Fanatic) and Sylvia Alba (JP, Neil Pryde) are currently ranked three and four in the women’s rankings and will both be fighting hard for an overall podium finish at the end of this season.
