2005 PWA, Leucate, France Super-X Preview
It’s time to fasten your seat belts and prepare for a rollercoaster ride of white-knuckle action! The PWA Super X tour is all set to kick off its season on the windswept beaches of Leucate in the south of France for a no holds barred series of fast and furious obstacle racing. With registration scheduled for the 19th of April, followed by action on the 20th through to the 25th, the stage is all set for a week of high octane, adrenaline pumped competition.
Located on the Mediterranean coast of France, Leucate is without doubt one of the windiest places in Europe. The reason behind its superb reputation for wind sports are the howling Tramontana winds…the area has statistics boasting over 300 days a year with wind over a force four! The Tramontana comes from the North West and generally blows cross offshore at the event headquarters. This direction creates ideal conditions for Super X racing and marks are set as close to the beach as possible so the crowds can get a bird’s eye view of all the crashes, drama and energy at the marks. This years racing format will continue to adopt the successful mixture of duck gybes, spocks, forwards and jump obstacles, with races starting either Le Mans style on the beach or by boat starts according to the conditions. Each round of racing will feature a starting line up of forty sailors, with the fleet divided into four ten man heats, two semi finals, a losers final and then the final.
Last years first ever PWA champion, Matt Pritchard (Gaastra, Tabou) will no doubt be on the staring grid at Leucate, in his bid to defend the title. The race in 2004 was a thrilling battle between Pritchard, Antoine Albeau (Neil Pryde) and Robby Swift (JP, Neil Pryde) with the title decided with a spectacular finale at the Fuerteventura Grand Slam.
“Since winning the super cross title last year, I have been injured and not on the water so much. I have had time to regroup and rest and I’m pretty fired up to defend my title. I think this year will be a tough one and I’m going to be ready. It sounds like we will have 4 good events again this year, so anything is possible. All I know, is I’m gonna come out swingin!”
The 2005 Super X calendar will also include stopovers in Costa Brava Spain followed by back-to-back events in the Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Remember, there can only be one winner in Super X and this thrilling race format is all about who goes over the line first. With the stakes high, and the contenders all gunning for first place, the tension can lead to collisions, crashes and gnarly wipeouts. Super X is the fast, furious and exciting race format, brought to you exclusively by the PWA world tour…Don’t miss out on the ride!
