Viana PWA World Cup

Day 7: Sarah-Quita Offringa is Officially the Champion of the 2018 Viana PWA World Cup

With the Women’s Freestyle fleet officially being released in the morning on Day 7 of the Viana PWA World Cup, Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) is now officially the champion of this year’s event, while making the perfect start in her quest for an incredible 11th PWA Freestyle World Championship.

For the slalom fleet the wait goes on, but today the wind never really threatened to kick in and with a similar looking forecast for tomorrow it looks unlikely that the results will change from here - however - as always anything can happen…

Offringa excelled again as she exuded her usual, unique style and showed that over the winter she has once again taken her sailing to another level. The 14-time world champion - 10 Freestyle & 4 Slalom - is now on course to retain her much loved title. After making the perfect start we caught up for a few words with the Aruban gem:

Sarah-Quita Offringa: ”I’m very happy to win the event obviously. I put more time into freestyle this year as I decided not to do slalom because I felt like I was dividing my time too much between disciplines, which also made me feel like I wasn’t improving in any of them. And I realised that I really wanted to get better at freestyle."

The conditions were great - different to Fuerteventura - and any other events we’ve ever had so I think we showed a really high level of freestyle and that’s the most important thing for me… to show that as women we can also perform at a high level. It was great to see Maaike [Huvermann, Oda [Johanne], Arrianne [Aukes] performing really well and also to see girls like Johanna [Rümenapp], Lena [Erdil] and Sarah [Jackson] also competing. I know we have received some sh*t about that, but I think it was an extremely important event for us.”

The skippers’ meeting for the Slalom has been called for 1pm tomorrow afternoon with a first possible start at 1:30pm (GMT+1) with the wind forecast looking light.
