Mercedes-Benz Windsurf World Cup Sylt

Day 1: All Set For A Wet & Windy Weekend After Registration Day

With the opening day of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sylt PWA World Cup belonging purely to registration, day one in Sylt was relatively calm with the competitors preparing their equipment for the next 9 days of competition, which continues to look windy on the latest forecast models.

A total of 104 competitors have registered for this year’s edition with 29 freestylers, 31 foil sailors, 12 women’s wave sailors and 32 men’s wave sailors (4 of which will come through the trials) signing up. The official opening ceremony was then held shortly before 4pm to conclude a relaxed opening day.

A quick look at the Freestyle Single Elimination shows a daunting first round heat for world title hopeful Youp Schmit (I-99 / Avanti), who has been pitted against former Freestyle World Champion - Kiri Thode (Severne / Severne Sails), while his world title rivals have been handed much easier draws on paper with Yentel Caers (I-99 / Point-7) up against Antoine Martin (JP / NeilPryde, Steven van Broeckhoven (Starboard / GUNSAILS) takes on Ezri Heijmans, while Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) receives a bye into the next round.

With a promising looking forecast for the weekend the Wave and Freestyle fleets will meet at 8:30am (GMT+2) for their first skippers’ meeting of the week with a first possible start at 9am. Meanwhile, the skippers’ meeting for the Foil fleet will be held at 10:30am with a first possible start at 12pm. The forecast for tomorrow currently predicts 20-27 knots winds from the southwest, so Saturday should see the start of either the Wave of the Freestyle Single Eliminations.
