The Best of…Simon Hurrey
One of the PWA World Tours newest faces, Simon Hurrey (K-61 RRD / Simmer) made his freestyle fleet debut in 2006. An amazing free sailor, Simon, 27, is based In Dahab, Egypt, for a good portion of the year where he manages a popular windsurfing center - allowing him to train in perfect freestyle conditions! Simon's training hard at wavesailing now with his girlfriend Laure Treboux (SUI-4 Naish / Naish) who's also escaped the Red Sea's mirror flat surfaces for the waves of Cape Town. We thought we'd ask him, as a dedicated coach, competitor and ambitious athlete, what his best Impressions are about tour life!
The Best...
Thing about being British is:
There are a lot of awesome British sailors to windsurf with.
Thing about being on tour is:
Being around all the other riders, the windsurfing and the social scene.
Party I went to recently:
Animal Windfest party, UK.
Board I’ve ever ridden:
RRD Hardcore wave 69
Traveling companions:
My windsurfing missus! I never get in trouble for being on the water, and never have to go sightseeing when there’s wind or waves…. or just never sightseeing actually!
Looking ladies are in:
Switzerland (With my arm twisted in a painful position behind my back)…. and Venezuela.
Day on tour ever:
The days leading up to Fuerteventura when everyone was out freesailing together. There were just outrageous stunts being thrown down.
Result I’ve had this year:
2nd at the British Freestyle championships.
Training outside of windsurfing:
Surfing.
Place to party:
Podersdorf during the PWA Freestyle World Cup.
Session I can remember:
Pungarehu Rd, Taranaki New Zealand. Mast high, down the line, 10 bottom turns. I'll Never forget it!
Destination for a trip:
One that has waves so you can surf when the wind is not there.
Local spot at home:
The wish tower in Eastbourne. Not epic but I have sailed it stacked on 3.7 with a big swell.
Windsurf shot I’ve ever seen:
Skyeboys table top off the lip from the PWA wave event in Vargas a few years ago, or most of Polakow’s one handed aerials!
Windsurf film I’ve ever seen:
FWD (only because plug and play is a bit old)
Juniors I’ve seen recently:
Kiri blows my mind. You think he can only slide and then pops a massive shaka.
Place on tour:
I've never been to Maui, Podersdorf was raining so I guess, Fuerteventura for consistency. But for action it has to be Maui!
Thanks Simon.
