Winners Of The World

France tops the PWA Nations Rankings and takes a clear victory in slalom. The Spanish rule the waves, and the boys from Bonaire help their nation to the top in freestyle.

After a year of fierce competition on the PWA tour, France is the best windsurfing nation overall, with Spain and Brazil 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The top spot for the best wave sailing nation was a closely fought affair between Spain and Germany, but the Spanish managed to steal the show by just half a point. After failing to get any points in Cabo Verde, four Spaniards sailed extremely well in the men’s fleet at Gran Canaria including Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, North, MFC), Jonas Ceballos (Fanatic, Simmer, MFC), Dario Ojeda (F2, Simmer, Mormaii, Dakine, MFC), and Alex Mussolini (Tabou, Vandal), banking the nation stacks of points. Add to this the Moreno twins (North), and Nayra Alonso (Fanatic, Severne), and you’ve got a Spanish pot of gold. And then of course factor in Mussolini’s outstanding display in Sylt and the Spanish just edge ahead.

In slalom, Antoine Albeau’s (JP, NeilPryde) dominance clearly helped France to the top of the table. Albeau actually racked up enough points to win the nation its first place in slalom all by himself, but just to stamp the nail firmly in the oppositions coffin, he had Cyril Moussilmani (Starboard, North), Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, Loft), and Alice Arutkin (Starboard, North) stashing points as well.

After a cracking final event in Sylt, with three of the boys from Bonaire, Taty Frans (Starboard, MauiSails), Kiri Thode (Starboard, Gaastra), and Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra) taking up the positions on the podium, there was never a chance that any other nation could have bagged enough points in freestyle. Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) put up a good fight for Venezuela, but on his own could only manage to gain enough points for his nation to finish second.
