2011 PWA SURF WORLD CUP
Huge crowds have headed down to Podersdorf to enjoy the weekend sun and to see the world’s best freestylers do their thing.
The light winds today meant competition couldn’t go ahead and the fleet had to relax and catch up on sleep after last night’s opening party.
This year we have a massive 47 man fleet, ready to compete for the €30,000 prize money. Along with the regular big names there are a lot of fresh faces ready to prove themselves on the world tour.
We took the opportunity to meet some of the new kids on the block, and find out their motivation to join the PWA.
Rick Jendrusch (Starboard/ Severne)
PWA: Where are you from?
Rick: I am from Holland.
PWA: How old are you?
Rick: I am 16 years old and the youngest person on the tour.
PWA: Where do you windsurf at home?
Rick: I windsurf at Brouwersdam in Holland, it is a really good freestyle spot. I always train in Holland.
PWA: So this is your first PWA event, how is it so far?
Rick: Podersdorf is a really nice event, really well organized and I am really hoping for some wind.
PWA: Have you done much training for an event like this?
Rick: I train all the time...as much as I can I really. I like it, so whenever it is windy I try to get out. I have also done some national championships.
PWA: Where do you hope to finish at this event?
Rick: I really would like to finish in the top 20, maybe 16th. We will see.
PWA: Which other events will you do this year?
Rick: I hope to also do Sylt and Lanzarote. And next year I will do the whole tour.
PWA: And finally, what is your favorite move?
Rick: The shaka is my favorite move; I love how you float in the air, it feels great.

Remko de Zeeuw (Gaastra)
PWA: What is your sail number?
Remko: H-444
PWA: Where are you from?
Remko: I am from the South West of Holland
PWA: Where do you sail at home?
Remko: I sail at Brouwersdam; it is a great spot and the standard is really high.
PWA: This is your first event; how come you have decided to join the PWA?
Remko: I have done some national championships and now I want to take it to the next level, and go international.
PWA: Where do you see yourself coming?
Remko: I am not sure, there is some tough competition. We will see.
PWA: Will you do some more PWA events this year?
Remko: I hope to do the rest of the tour but it will depend on money and time as I have to work to.
PWA: How have you trained for this event?
Remko: I have been training in Bonaire this winter, my first heat is Chico Bento. I think it will be hard.
PWA: What is your favorite move?
Remko: I really like the air funnel.

Jamie Drummond (Fanatic)
PWA: Where are you from?
Jamie: I am from England
PWA: what is your sail number?
Jamie: My number is K-787.
PWA: This is your first PWA event, what do you home to achieve?
Jamie: Hopefully I won’t embarrass myself and get through my first heat.
PWA: Which other events will you do this year?
Jamie: I will see how this event goes, but I hope to do more events this year.
PWA: Where would you like to come in this event?
Jamie: I hope to come in the top 20, that would be a great start.
PWA: How have you trained for this event?
Jamie: I have been trying to do heat sailing by myself to make sure my moves are really consistent. It is good to get used to heat sailing so you’re ready for competition.
PWA: Where do you sail at home?
Jamie: I don’t sail much in England as I work abroad a lot. I work in Dahab in Egypt, and Greece in the summer. My last trip was to Jeri in Brazil for 6 weeks.
PWA: Whats your favorite move?
Jamie: I really like the Shaka and the regular Kono.

Paul Boef (Naish/ Fanatic)
PWA: Where are you from?
Paul: I am from Holland
PWA: What is your sail number?
Paul: It is NED- 720
PWA: This is your first event; what do you think so far?
Paul: I think it is great really well organised nice people and the parties have been fun, I hope the wind comes soon.
PWA: Have you trained much for this event?
Paul: My entry is quite last minute so I have not had much time to prepare for competition, but I try to sail as much as I can when it is windy.
PWA: Where do you hope to come in the competition?
Paul: I hope to get through my first heat and go from there!
PWA: And finally, What is your favourite move?
Paul: I really like the one handed Shaka.

This evening we have some tow-in action taking place and the top 16 will get the opportunity to wow the crowds.
