The 2003 PWA world tour calendar opens up with a €25,000 freestyle qualifier on the south coast of France. The Mondial du Vent is a huge well-organized event, which will run this year from the 19th –24th of April with the 19th as registration day.

The beach at La Franqui, in the Leucate area is the competition HQ and huge crowds about 200 000 people are expected to come and watch the action as well as check out the latest 2003 equipment, which will also be on exhibition.

Last years event saw awesome freestyle conditions with French Champion Antoine Albeau (AHD, Neil Pryde) keeping the local crowds happy with a solid performance ahead of Canada’s Web Pedrick (AHD, North) and Mathew Bonno (JP, Neil Pryde) in third. The standard of sailing was incredible with spock 540’s, clew first spock 540’s, grubbies, wymaroos and diablos a-plenty.

Leucate is blessed with a local wind known as the Tramontane, a mountain wind, which can easily reach gale force. The climate in Leucate is generally pleasant although when the wind blows it can get a little chilly. Water temperature for the time of year should be around 15 degrees C and most sailors wear either long or short arm winter suits. The wind generally blows side-offshore providing perfect flat-water conditions for executing freestyle moves.

Accommodation abounds in the area with a huge choice of self-catering apartments, camping, hotels or Gites.
