Interview With Remko De Weerd

Q: How did you feel about winning the Costa Brava freestyle qualifier?

RDW: It was great to win this event. This was my first competition this year so it could not have been a better start of the season...

Q: Was it a fun event?

RDW: The event was very well organized from beginning to end... We had a nice competition on the windy days... and some fierce tennis/golf battles on the not so windy days...

Q: What training did you do this winter?

RDW: This winter I went to Isla Margarita again for my yearly freestyle-lessons from the local kids (Cheo, Alexis & Ricardo...). After which I was hoping for some good wind in Leucate. Unfortunately this event did not take place and after that I went to Morocco with the French Windmag to train a bit more and participate in their freestyle DVD.

Q: Did the training in Margarita that raise your standard?

RDW: For sure those two training sessions helped me a lot. It is good to sail in different places and to be able to perform well in different conditions. For training new moves I like Margarita a lot because the conditions are always the same and the kids are pushing you to and beyond the limit.

Q: What do you think is the toughest freestyle move?

RDW: It is hard to say... but I am having a lot of problems with the chacho...

Q: Any new moves in the pipeline

RDW: I can give you the name but I am not going to give my new move away !!!!!And the name is... Misty Flip... Have fun thinking what it could be...

Q: Pozo is the next big one on the calendar...are you looking forward to the big winds?

<PHOTO3>

RDW: "Pozo is not really my kind of game," is what I said last year on the first day of the event. I won the first elimination that day and still think about it the same way. It is for sure not my favorite spot but the more you have sailed there the more you get used to it... Let's wait and see...

Q: Who are the guys to watch out for over there?

RDW: I think it is hard to predict, but I expect a lot from Ricardo, Matt and Kauli...

Q: Words to live by?

RDW: Train the brain and the body will follow...
