DAVIDOFF COOL WATER SYLT WORLD CUP

Day 8: Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo clinches victory in Philips Winch Tow-in Freestyle Night Session

The eighth day of the DAVIDOFF Cool Water Sylt PWA Super Grand Slam saw the light winds continue, but there was still plenty of action on the water to keep the crowds entertained throughout the day. First of all a wind SUP race was held, which saw teams of four going head-to-head in a relay battle. Eventually Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / Mystic), Antoine Albert (Tabou / GA Sails), Taty Frans (Starboard / MauiSails / Mystic / MFC) and Nicolas Akgazciyan (99 International / Point-7 / AL360 / Maui Ultra Fins) came out on top, before an evening of explosive action in the Philips Winch Tow-in Freestyle contest, which saw Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic / North / MFC) claim victory ahead of Ricardo Campello (Patrik / Point-7 / MFC).

Philips Winch Tow-in Freestyle Night Session

The crowds gathered on the beach ahead of tonight’s tow-in spectacle, which saw ten of the best freestyle sailors in the world given two attempts each to wow the crowd and the judges with their biggest and most explosive moves. The competition started in slower fashion than normal, but the action soon burst into life.

Tonky Frans (Tabou / GA Sails) led after the first round after rotating through a perfect burner, but the Bonairean couldn’t hold onto his lead as the rest of the fleet upped their level during the second round. Ricardo Campello looked to have stolen the top prize, and the show, after finding a rogue wave and launching into a quite incredible pushloop - earning 44 points. However, five-time PWA Freestyle World Champion - Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo - was still to come and the showman produced the goods yet again to steal the victory from under the nose of Campello, as he landed an immaculate burner 360. After a brief wait it was soon revealed that the Venezuelan had toppled Campello with 45 points, whilst Frans was left to settle for third.

Looking Ahead

After six days of no official competition it looks as though the patient waiting game should be rewarded tomorrow with the forecast predicting winds of eighteen to twenty-three knots from the south-southeast for the entire day. With this in mind the skippers’ meeting has been called bright and early for the wave and freestyle heats - 7am - with the action commencing from 7:30am. Meanwhile, the slalom fleet will meet at 10am with the first possible start at 10:30am. Don’t miss any of the action by tuning into www.pwaworldtour.com, here you’ll be able to follow everything that happens via the PWA live stream and live ticker.
