Just One More Run…

Eva Oude Ophuis learns the dangers of that famous phrase ‘just one more run’

Every windsurfer has been there, when you are having an amazing session and you simply don’t want it to end or when things - whether it be the conditions or yourself - aren’t going quite right and you want just one more run to transform that session into a memorable one and you simply can’t resist just one more run.  Unfortunately, for Eva Oude Ophuis (Fanatic / North), that final run on her last session ended somewhat disastrously and the Dutch beauty is now facing some time off the water. We caught up with Eva to find out exactly what happened…

PWA: How did you injure yourself?

Eva: “My plan was a short morning windsurfing session before work.  The conditions were not that epic, but whatever the conditions (if sailable), it’s my meditation moment and I have to take advantage of it whenever I can.”

“I was windsurfing for almost an hour and my boyfriend was filming for the first time to practice some moves. Then the wind started to pick up and the conditions became better… Although I had to stop because of work, I just wanted to do one more run because there was finally enough wind in the shore break for backies. I asked my boyfriend if he could film one more run to have a backloop on movie. I almost never over-rotate backloops anymore, but somehow I over rotated and landed with my heels stuck in my footstraps on my board. Not even a high jump or hard crash, but just unlucky.”

PWA: What’s the injury diagnosis?

Eva: “Mmmm I think it’s better to spare you the details, because even I don’t know exactly yet. It has to do with my syndesmosis, anklebones and cartilage and my previous ankle injury. I go back to the orthopaedic on Wednesday again and I expect some relatively positive news.”

PWA: When are you hoping to be back on the water?

Eva: “I think three months from now on is fair, unless I get some bad news on Wednesday, which I won’t expect. I cancelled my winter windsurf destination and I probably will plan my new windsurfing trip the end of March/beginning of April.  Maybe Maui?”

PWA: When you’re injured how do you like to try and pass the time?

Eva: “It’s really hard to sit and rest. Just before Christmas I actually had my first (night) working shifts at the first emergency alone. Because I am in a plastic cast and on crutches I am not allowed to take care of the trauma’s in the hospital.  So despite being off the water it’s even worse because my colleagues had to take over my shifts of last week. I felt super guilty… If you are reading this, thank you so much!

To be honest I have many things to do to pass my time like studying, reading, eating a lot of nice food (preferably chocolate with nuts), but also doing some yoga because my restless body really has to move.  As soon as I am relieved of this cast I will work again and train a lot with the physio to make my body stronger than I ever was before!”

PWA: Top movies to pass the time?

Eva: “The Red Bull Storm Chase movie was amazing! This week I watched it 3 times! I love to see the power of the nature and of course the guys who can still manage to sail in it super well, big respect. For the rest I just watched some girly romantic comedies and some nice documentaries on www.topdocumentaryfilms.com. I recommend the documentary ‘beer culture’.

PWA: Thanks, Eva, good luck with the recovery and we hope you are back on the water soon.
