Road to Recovery

Injury Update with Ethan Westera

As many of you will already be aware, Ethan Westera (Tabou / GA Sails), was injured while racing during the Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam last week. Since then, Ethan has undergone an operation and returned to Holland of a further check up. You can read all about Ethan’s latest update below.

Ethan Westera: “Just arrived back from the hospital. My cut has been looked at by a pretty good specialist here in Holland really known with being in contact with professional cyclists. All in all this was some pretty disappointing news for me, because I really thought it wasn’t so bad…

He had a look into my cut and said that I broke my the tendon of my big toe, tore all the other tendons from my small toes and also my flex tendon broke (which flex’s and points my foot). In the end I will have a cast for 3 weeks with a checkup every 10 days! After that I will have to follow with 4 weeks with tape and still no walking on my foot. After that 4 weeks I can start to try to walk again (taking it easy) and then I can start training again (getting back to 100%).

This is the best scenario that can happen to me! I will be out for 2.5 months more or less... The worst scenario is I get an infection and they need to operate again and god knows how long it will take if that happens…

So I will be out for this season and focusing on myself. I hope I can see everyone on tour as soon as possible again and I wish them all the best!!:)

I really had a different thought in my mind, which was way more positive. I just really need to take some time and just accept it and move on, but it will take some time for me.

I will be in Holland a bit longer to make sure that I get everything done right. I will be looking at 3 to 4 weeks in Holland. Hopefully everything will go according to plan and I can go back to Aruba and continue the rehabilitation.

Thanks again to everyone for all the concern and positive messages. Also thanks to my aunt for all the help in Holland. I really appreciate it.

I will be back.

Love Ethan.”

Everyone from the PWA wishes Ethan all the best with his recovery and hope to see him back on the water competing soon.
