Matteo Iachino leaves Point-7 to join Severne Sails International Team

Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails / Shamal Sunglasses) has enjoyed a fast rise to the top of the sport over the last few seasons. The Italian won a maiden world title in 2016, while finishing 2017 as the vice-world champion and is now one of the most feared sailors on the PWA Slalom World Tour. After two highly successful seasons with Point-7 the Italian has decided the time is right to move on as he joins the Severne International Team for 2018.

Matteo Iachino moves on to a new challenge: “I’ve been a black team rider for 2 years. Point-7 and Andrea Cucchi gave me the weapons to win my first world title and achieve a vice world champion title this year. I want to say thanks to him, Francesco and Pizza and for sure to all the other guys from the black team I got in touch during this journey and who gave me the power to get where I am now.

Now it’s 2018 and it’s time to move on. I got in touch with Ben Severne and the other guys from Severne. They wanted to go full power on the racing side. The new Mach 1 is just an amazing sail and the plan of development is great allowing me and Gonzalo to test whatever we want to speed up the evolution of the sails we use to race. I worked with Gonzalo a lot and I’m happy to start working with him on the sails too. I decided to move and to be red and blue from this year on. I can’t wait to trim everything and start a new season facing new challenges!”

Matteo Iachino on joining Severne: "I’m really happy to be joining the Severne team. It’s never easy to leave the old way for the new. But after I had the chance to try the new sails I felt convinced with their performance and see them being the next winning step forward. Having talked with Ben Severne for the first time I could feel he really wants to build the fastest sails and he really wants to work hard towards this goal. Having a whole team fully focused on developing something different to win is probably the best feeling you could have when you’re racing at a World Cup level. I’ve already been working with Gonzalo Costa Hoevel a lot during the board testing for Starboard and I’m happy to start working with him on the sails as well. All of these factors together pushed me toward the decision of joining this team for the upcoming races. I’m confident we will have a special season ahead!“

Ben Severne: “It’s a privilege to have Matteo riding our sails. There’s lots of inspiration to build faster engines to power his future results.  Really excited to have him involved.”

We are looking forward to see Matteo racing on the brand-new Mach 1 and wish him the best of luck for the 2018 season.
