Alessio Stillrich faces 6 months on the sidelines after sustaining double leg fracture in Cape Town

Last year Alessio Stillrich (Fanatic / NorthSails) enjoyed his best year to date on the PWA Wave World Tour, which saw him break into the overall top 10 for the first time in his career (9th).

Unfortunately though the 22-year-old has just faced a major setback in his buildup for the 2018 season after sustaining a double fracture whilst training in Cape Town, South Africa. Stillrich has already undergone surgery, but faces up to 6 months off the water. Everyone from the PWA would like to take the opportunity to wish Alessio a speedy and successful recovery and hope to see him back on the water ripping soon!

Alessio Stillrich talking about what happened: “Man basically I made an aerial at Cape Point, but I got a bit out of control so the aerial was like a kind of strange air taka and I landed on the lip of the wave which completely destroyed my tibia and fibula. Also a small ligament in the ankle is badly damaged.

Luckily Klaas [Voget] was on the wave behind and he towed me back immediately with my leg hanging around…Then on the beach a lot of people helped me to stabilise the foot with some pieces of wood and tape until the ambulance came... which took like an hour!

I had surgery the next day and will be out of the water for about 6 months! Pretty ****** up!”
