Mercedes-Benz Windsurf World Cup Sylt

Day 5: Focus Shifts To Freestyle Heading Into Wednesday After A Lay Day

After yesterday’s manic day of competition, the fifth day of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz Windsurf World Cup Sylt proved to be the polar opposite with only light winds throughout meaning that no contest was possible.

For a short time a few of the Foil fleet were tempted out on to the water, but it never really looked like it was going to happen and shortly after 5pm the sailors were released for the day.

With a decent looking forecast for Wednesday with 21-27 knot northwesterly currently being predicted the focus for tomorrow will be to complete the Men’s Freestyle Double Elimination and with it decide the 2019 Freestyle World Championship. After yesterday, Amado Vrieswijk (JP / Severne) currently leads the race, but fate is out of his own hands as if either Youp Schmit (I-99 / Avanti) or Yentel Caers (I-99 / Point-7) fight back into 6th place one of them will be the world champion.

However, one of them will be able to advance into the top 6 as they are both on the same side of the draw and they could potentially meet in Heat 30b to decide the title as a victory in that heat would guarantee a place in the top 6. So, tomorrow is going to be a big day on the water! The Freestyle fleet will meet at 9am (GMT+2) with a first possible start at 9:30am, while the Foil fleet will meet again at 9:30am with a first possible start at 10:30am, but with the wind expected to be onshore it is unlikely that they will compete.
