Would You Rather

With Lina Erpenstein

Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) may have missed the opening event of the 2019 calendar due to her studies, but once she was back in the competition arena in Tenerife there was no keeping her away as she then went on to compete at the remaining events to secure 4th place in the overall rankings. The 23-year-old is next up in ‘Would You Rather’ and it makes for a super interesting read, so make sure you have a look below:

If you were reborn in a new life, would you rather be alive in the past or future?

Hmmm that’s difficult. In fact that question makes me appreciate the times we live in even more. Even though we might have to stay inside for a while now, in general we are living in great times. Of course there are still places in this world with poverty and war that we should prevent, but also we are living in one of the most peaceful times ever. We are free to choose where we live in peace and freedom, how we want to spend our life, who we want to share it with. We might take it as a given, but maybe what we are going through right now will make us appreciate it even more. Well, back to the question, I guess I’d choose the future, but just because I’m curious how the story of the Homo sapiens is gonna go on.

Would you rather be free or be totally safe?

I would definitely choose to be free, but that might be a side effect of windsurfing. Our sport brings so much freedom, with all the travels and adventures. And also you cannot really make plans or appointments, because you always risk missing the next session. So due to that I think our lifestyle has prepared us for the total freedom haha.

Would you rather Have free Wi-Fi wherever you go or have free coffee where/whenever you want?

Definitely coffee. Actually I almost live like that already, especially if Sarah-Quita is around. Just that till now I always had to pay for my coffee.

Would you rather lose the ability to read or lose the ability to speak?

I guess to speak, because there’s many more ways to communicate with others. Whereas there’s only one way to learn about other times, about science or dive into different worlds of a book.

Would you rather spend the rest of your life with a sailboat as your home or an RV as your home?

Both sounds pretty nice I have to say. If it really was forever I’d choose the boat, because that means you’ll always be at the ocean and will also be able to cross it. Also I have always wanted to experience staying on a boat, being able to jump off with your surfboard or windsurf gear to the break with just your friends out.

Would you rather have unlimited international first-class tickets or never have to pay for food at restaurants?

I would choose food at restaurants. Even though world tickets sound really appealing I think that would have the effect that we would step on a plane even more often and more unconscious of all the bad consequences of air travel, than we already do. As windsurfers we fly more than the average person anyway.

Our carbon footprint is a lot bigger than others, while we promote ourselves as a green sport. So I think its good you at least have to pay for your transportation and I think this will make you think about it more and maybe step on a few planes less than if it was all for free.

Would you rather be forced to dance every time you heard music or be forced to sing along to any song you heard?

I love music and I love dancing so I’d go with that. Even though it might make the casual coffee with friends a bit hectic and will bring you some laughers at the gym if you couldn’t stop dancing haha.

Would you rather travel the world for a year on a shoestring budget or stay in only one country for a year but live in luxury?

I’d want to travel the world. I think this way of traveling could be really adventurous and interesting and you probably have to be flexible and inventive to not get stuck. On the other hand you will probably get to places you’d otherwise never visit or get to know people you’d never meet. Just hitch hiking will surely be more difficult with two board bags on top haha.

Would you rather have a horrible job, but be able to retire comfortably in 10 years or have your dream job, but have to work until the day you die?

I would love to have a job I like and if I can find that, it would also be fine to work longer. Of course there would always be days I would hope to have chosen differently, but I think in general this would be a more interesting and balanced life.

Would you rather be able to land every move in the world right now and never crash again or still be able to still learn new moves, but crash 10 times more frequently than it usually takes you to land a new move?

I feel like I’m already crashing 10 times more now haha. I would still always choose the way where you have to learn it all by yourself, because that’s what makes windsurfing so fun. There’s no better feeling than landing a new move and you would fully lose that if you could do all the moves already. Also the stoke if you land something, you thought you’d never be able to lang safely, due to a bad takeoff or so. For now that might sound strange, but I can imagine that it would even be boring after a while if you always knew that you will land the move you want to try right now.

Great answers, thanks Lina!
