Blast From The Past

With Kai Katchadourian

Next up in ‘Blast From The Past’ is Kai Katchadourian (Simmer / Simmer Sails), who has dedicated his life to windsurfing and has almost 4 decades of experience. The now 49-year-old has previously been ranked as high as number 7 in the world of waves (2000), but his talents extend much further than just on the water - most recently being the voice of the PWA during the Aloha Classic, whilst also competing, while away from windsurfing he is also an avid drummer. Never short on energy or something to say it’s over to Kai.

Hey Kai, take us back to the memory of your very first windsurf experience - Where were you?

The very first time I tried to windsurf was in Finland at our Summer Home.

When was it?

1983

With who were you?

My sister and some friends.

What do you remember from that very first ‘session’?

It was nearly impossible to pick up the sail, the sport was new and beginner equipment did not exist.

Who was your local hero? And why?

My first local hero was my Father in Law, he could sail in so much wind.

What gear were you using?

I had a board called a Monsoon. Then when we were in the USA we had a Stock Windsurfer.

Describe your feeling when you were planing for the first time…

That was the beginning of a lifelong dedication.

How did you realise you were becoming a professional windsurfer?

When I was making money right after High School.

Give a tip for the next generation…

Don't do anything unless you absolutely love doing it. The wind is free, and windsurfing is freedom. It's all about sailing.

Thanks, Kai.
