Hot or Not? Episode 1

Competitive windsurfing has two sides. First over the line wins the race, or whoever impresses the judges the most wins. But what do the top pro’s think about certain styles and approaches? For a series intended to be a bit of fun, we polled a handful of the finest on some of windsurfing's most topical subjects. Here we go with episode one and the first few big issues - this time it’s the sailors who’re the judges!

1. Crowds. Motivating and fun, or limiting and dangerous?

Xavier Huart (F-33) ‘It Depends...I’d rather like to be alone with friends...Dangerous I would say, especially when Diony is around!!!’

Karin Jaggi (Z-14, F2/ North Sails) ‘Motivating and fun – as long as it’s not every day of the year’

Josh Angulo (CV-1) ‘Limiting and dangerous’

Daida Moreno (E-64, Mistral/ North Sails) ‘Motivating and fun of course!’

Ross Williams (GBR-83 Tabou / Gaastra) ‘If its a crowd of kooks then its limiting for sure, but if its a bunch of the better sailors who know what they are doing, and let everyone have a chance on the set waves then its really  motivating and great to watch’

Dan Ellis (GBR-52 Fanatic / Naish) ‘There’s nothing better than sailing with a crowd of mates, but a break busier than Piccadilly Circus drives me crazy!’

Matt Pritchard (US-10 Tabou / Gaastra) ‘Depends on my mood’

Robby Swift (K-89, JP/ Neil Pryde) ‘Its annoying more than anything. Its always nice to have some of the boys out sailing with you but too many people just get in the way’

2. Freestyle tricks on waves. Lame or insane?

Xavier Huart ‘They’re insane when its flat... they’re insane when hollow...but its a crime when people forget to surf the wave instead...’

Ross Williams ‘If its off of the lip or a nice section of the wave it looks sick but otherwise...Lame!

Karin Jaggi ‘Definitely insane! ‘Or can you do it?’

Josh Angulo ‘Pretty insane’

Robby Swift ‘Big takas, goiters and shakas on the waves are cool. But doing a spock, flaka or even a shaka on a swell before the wave has started breaking is not that hard, and shouldn't really be scored as part of a wave ride in my opinion’

3.Wearing shorts over your wetsuit? Fashion or Function?

Nik Baker (K-66, Mistral/ North Sails) ‘Neither. Its very sad!’

Antxon Otaegui (E-169, JP/ Neil Pryde) ‘Thats pretty horrible!’

Karin Jaggi ‘Fashion – and a bad one!’

Femke van der Valk ( NED-19 F2 / Maui Sails)  ‘Fake!’

Robby Swift ‘A poor fashion - what could the function possibly be?’

Finian Maynard (KV-11 F2 / NeilPryde) ‘Function!’

Ricardo Campello (V-111, JP/ Neil Pryde) ‘If its a long leg wetsuit it looks very stupid and just like the kite surfers!’

Watch out for more harsh judgement soon…
