2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup

Day 1: Registered, Rigged & Ready After a Quiet Start to Proceedings

The inaugural day of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup saw a total of 104 competitors registering for the first competition in Pozo Izquierdo in 3 years between 10-11am across the Men’s, Women’s, Youth and Junior fleets.

Unfortunately, the wind refused to play ball on the opening day, and although there were a few flutters which tempted a few sailors out onto the water, the conditions never remained consistent enough to compete with the wind direction constantly switching direction and strength.

The opening ceremony was held in the early evening to officially declare the event open and attention now turns to tomorrow. The forecast still predicts strong winds, but with temperatures expected to soar to a scorching 37 degrees that may prevent the normal thermal from kicking in, so the main hope for competing may come in the morning and evening when the temperature should be slightly cooler.

With the wind and waves failing to improve the Youths were released shortly after 6pm and they, together with the pro fleet, will meet again at 9am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 9:30am (GMT+1) onwards - if conditions are suitable.
