2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup

Day 2: Maria Morales & Peter Gobisch Make Strong Starts in the U17 Girl’s & U15 Boy’s as the Wind Returns to Pozo Izquierdo

After a slow start to proceedings yesterday, day two of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup provided a lot more action with the wind returning. There were spells when the wind was up and down, but ultimately the first results of the competition were gained in the U17 Girl’s and U15 Boy’s (results are still subject to change) as the next generation of windsurfers took centre stage in Pozo.

Wave

Girl’s

U17

Maria Morales Novarro (Goya Windsurfing) made a strong start to the event in the Girl’s U17s by winning both of the finals sailed today with a confident display of sailing, which saw the 16-year-old land several solid forward loops, while she showed an aggressive approach to her wave riding. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails) produced a great display to secure second place ahead of Annagiulia Piccaglia after the first two finals.

U20

In the Girls U20s only the top 3 girls are left standing. Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) became the first girl to book her place in the final after she managed to defeat Lisa Wermeister (Fanatic / Duotone) in Heat 1. The 17-year-old impressed with an excellent backloop and made the most of the small waves on offer. Meanwhile, Isabel Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails)) advanced straight to the final after winning Heat 2 ahead of Julia Pasquale (Fanatic / Duotone) and Lucia Trivino Delgado (Severne / Severne Sails), who would go into the repechage round against Wermeister.

Pasquale proved too strong in the repechage round as she secured the last place in the final, which will hopefully be completed tomorrow.

Boy’s

U15

Peter Gobisch (Fanatic / Duotone), Arthur Van den Brande (RRD / RRD Sails) and Javier Escribano Toribio (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) all qualified for the U15 Boy’s Final - with the latter successfully coming through the repechage round. The final proved to be a tight affair with Gobisch eventually just coming out on top by way of a 2:1 decision. In the end, Gobisch just snatched the victory with the young German’s superior wave riding proving to be the difference. Van den Brande and Escribano Toribio both sailed well, but ultimately Van den Brande was left to rue only having one counting jump as the criteria specified that the two jumps must be different.

U17

During the afternoon the Boy’s U17s also took to the water and they have now been whittled down to the top 4 sailors. Teammates, Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Fanatic / Duotone) and Tobias Bjørnaa (Fanatic / Duotone), will meet in the first semifinal, whilst Grigoris Stathopoulos (Severne / Severne Sails) face Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde) for a place in the final.

With the waves dropping off as the afternoon progressed the decision was made to wait for better conditions to complete the U20 Girl’s Final and the U17 Boy’f Final and the sailors were released shortly before 6pm. They will meet again at 9:30am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 10am onwards. The forecast for Monday is similar to today, so there should hopefully be wind again, but the question remains on whether there will be enough waves to compete with the forecast currently predicting waves of 1.1m in the morning.
