Moreno Training Camp in Tenerife
Champions several times over, Daida Moreno (North) and sister Iballa Moreno (North) have once again selflessly and generously donated their time and money towards promoting and advancing the standard of the women’s sport.
Helped in the past by other big names like Anne Marie Reichmann (Naish / Naish), Nayra Alonso (Fanatic / Severne) and Karin Jaggi (F2 / North) they’ve introduced many new ladies onto the competitive scene. Evi Tsape of Greece was one example of their efforts paying off when she finished up 9th overall in 2006 in Freestyle and 14th in the waves on her debut season.
Iballa explained the reason they started the camps. ‘Just as Daida and I started out on the tour, it seemed that lots of girls retired! Since then we’ve always fought to involve more girls into the sport and eventually into the tour. We knew lots of girls that were good enough to get into competitions but never had the chance to join the tour - particularly for financial reasons’
With Fanatic and North coming on board to help out, the ladies in waiting just got a massive boost to their chances of pushing through into the professional arena. Iballa continues.’ Previously we’ve taught loads of the ladies that showed up, how to become more professional, how to work with the media - starting with local and national press – and how to do your own marketing.... Not forgetting of course - how to improve in the water!’
Daida explained the progress many made during the last two years camps.’ After few days of hard training we started to see the best results; from girls trying tabletop forwards, to simply doing a forward loop for their first time! And, every day we gave away product prizes from the sponsors as incentives to push it!’
One of last years attendees Rachel Trucker of the UK sums it up.’ Small sails, happy smiles, many languages, inspirational action, crazy dancing, big air!’
