Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup

Day 1: Preparing in paradise as windsurfing shows why patience is key

The opening day of the Riviera Guadeloupe PWA Windsurf World Cup saw sailors registering between 9-11am - local time - before the first skippers’ meeting of the week took place at 1pm. Unfortunately, as the nature of this wonderful sport goes - the conditions failed to play ball, but come the end of the event there should hopefully be plenty of action.

From a spectators points of view that actually makes things pretty interesting as the best racers in the world will be given no margin for error…

Earlier in the day we spoke to potentially one of the top contenders on the men’s side, Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde), who had this to say: “I arrived about five days ago. I spent three days on the water. Really nice, you know, it's this tropical vibe, you get to sail in boardshorts, the water is like a soup, and we had actually good conditions. I think it's the curse of the first year of a PWA event somewhere. If you look at least at my time, every time we go somewhere for the first time, we get unlucky with the forecast. The first time we went to Japan we didn't race, same in Marignane etc. The first time we went to [Lake] Garda, which is about the most reliable place in May in the world, I think, we had terrible weather and we barely squeaked in a few eliminations. So, yeah, sooner or later, the weather will change, of course, but let's see. We’re probably going to have to wait until towards the end of the comp to race.”

Although conditions don’t look too promising for tomorrow, the good news is that the second half of the event should hopefully provide much of the high-octane racing we are all yearning for.

For now, though you can see a full pit walk with Sarah Jackson @ https://youtu.be/3qkGj68kRvI?si=nPPlvKYTyziboHsA
