Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup

Event Summary: Daida Moreno makes dream return to claim 23rd Pozo title, while Philip Köster captures event title No.8 at one of the windiest Pozo’s ever

Pozo Izquierdo is known as the ‘Home of the Wind’ and it sure lived up to its reputation over the last nine days. The opening couple of days saw possibly the windiest ever competition in Gran Canaria with several sailors alluding to the fact that it felt as windy as some of the Red Bull Storm Chase missions, while the closing weekend also saw more nuclear winds to cap another fantastic edition of the Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup, which saw results gained in all of the 10 divisions, to cap an extremely busy, but also extremely successful event as windsurfing got to show itself as the beautifully dynamic sport it is.

Wave

Women’s

Daida Moreno (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) made a surprise return to the lineup this year having announced her retirement from competition in 2023. However, the result had a sense of regularity about it as the 47-year-old dug deep in the dying seconds of the Super Final to deny Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) the victory as Daida continues her love affair with Pozo Izquierdo having just claimed a 23rd event title. Moreno has been known for her aerial prowess throughout her long and illustrious career, so it perhaps comes as no surprise that she achieved the highest scoring jump of the event - 7.10 points - for a massive stalled forward.

Having come about as close to winning as you can without actually winning, it will still be a bitter pill for Offringa to swallow having come so agonisingly close to achieving her longterm goal of defeating Moreno on her home waters. The reigning world champion will still take heart from the fact that she produced a great performance in the final against Moreno to force a Super Final, while in the grand scheme of things second place here still represents a solid result in her quest to win a fifth consecutive wave world title.

Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) managed to keep her podium streak going after climbing one place in the Double Elimination after defeating Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails). The 20-year-old has now podiumed at her last six events in a run stretching back to Chile in 2024.

Meanwhile, Degrieck just misses out on the podium, but still earns her best result to date in Pozo - 4th - while she also finishes the event with the highest scoring heat of the contest - 24 points - in the Single Elimination when she landed pushloops, frontside airs and a taka, while even trying a double forward to show that even at 15-years-old she’s now a major threat for the very top positions.

Maria Morales (Goya Windsurfing) did brilliantly to recover from a disappointing result in the single to climb back into fifth place from ninth as the young Spaniard advanced through five consecutive heats. Justyna Sniady (Flikka / North Sails) walks away from Pozo in sixth after suffering the narrowest of losses to Morales with just 0.04 of a point separating the two sailors in Heat 45.

Men’s

Philip Köster (Severne / Severne Sails) walks away from the 2025 Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup with his eighth event Pozo title, which is also his first 5-star victory on the World Tour since Sylt in 2022. The five-time world champion produced his usual polished display of sailing consisting of stalled double forwards, pushloop forwards and even a no-handed goiter as he saw off stiff competition from Marcilio Browne (Goya Windsurfing / MFC) in the Super Final. Köster also posted the highest scoring heat of the contest - 31.73 points. Victory in Gran Canaria sees Köster rise to second in the overall world rankings.

Marcilio Browne pushed Köster all the way, but couldn’t quite keep his incredible winning streak going, which had seen the Brazilian win his first three events of the season. Browne produced another world class display here to secure a solid second place, which keeps him in the world title race lead as we head to Tenerife for the next event. Browne also earned three perfect 10 scores throughout the event for radical stalled double forwards and pushloop forwards.

Last year’s event champion, Marino Gil (JP / NeilPryde / MFC) completes the prestigious overall podium, which is the third consecutive year that he’s finished in the top three at his home event. Gil’s best finish of the season thus far sees him rise to fourth in the overall world rankings.

Marc Paré (Simmer / Simmer Sails / MFC) was slightly disappointed with his fourth place finish immediately afterwards, but with a bit of time to reflect he should still be able to look back at this result as a solid one - especially given the incredible level of all of the top four sailors - who were on a different level to everyone else. Paré is conscious of losing more ground to Browne in the world title race, but will now shift his attention to Tenerife where he is the defending event champion.

Elsewhere, Liam Dunkerbeck (Duotone Windsurfing) managed to advance through five heats on the spin to move into the top five for the event by claiming an impressive victory over Ricardo Campello (MFC) in Heat 45, but he didn’t have quite enough fire power to negotiate his way passed Paré on this occasion.

Campello, meanwhile, fought his way back from the very first round of the double and he started to gather some serious momentum as he continually bettered his previous heat scores and threatened to try and fight his way all the way to the top after a disappointing result in the Single Elimination. The 40-year-old beat Dunkerbeck in Heat 44, which was a four man heat, but then lost out in the man-on-man in the very next heat to finish in 6th.

The top eleven is completed by Victor Fernandez - 7th - Alessio Stillrich (Bruch Boards / Bruch Sails) - 8th - Moritz Mauch (Simmer / Simmer Sails), who earned the highest single wave score for the contest, 8.13 points - joint 9th alongside Miguel Chapuis (Flikka / North Sails), and Antoine Martin (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing / MFC) and Mike Friedl (Goya Windsurfing), who share equal 11th, which is Friedl’s best result to date on the World Tour.

Youth’s and Master’s

As well as the pro fleets, there were eight other fleets in action ranging from the next generation (U13s-U21s) right up to the Master’s division and all the fleets produced more entertaining action, but ultimately their could only be one winner in each division; siblings Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) and Carlos Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) won the U21 Girl’s and Boy’s respectively, Sol Degrieck and Javi Escribano (Goya Windsurfing / MFC)  won the U18 Girl’s and Boy’s, Trine Gobisch (Duotone Windsurfing) and Yannik Kolb Gonzalez (F2 / Simmer Sails) claimed the top spots in the U15 Girl’s and Boy’s, while Yannik’s brother, Dennis Kolb Gonzalez, managed to win the U13 Boy’s. Meanwhile, reigning world champion, Mike Friedl (Quatro / Goya Windsurfing) claimed the victory in the Master’s division.

That concludes the 37th edition of the Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup, we hope you enjoyed the action as much as we as we did and the PWA would like to once again extend their thanks to Bjørn Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails) and his team for all of their efforts in making the event happen and we look forward to hopefully returning next year.

Where’s Next on the PWA World Tour?

In just a few days time the 37th edition of the Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam will begin with this year’s event running between 18th-27th July. Over the next 10 days in Fuerteventura there will be plenty to feast your eyes on starting with the first Slalom X event of the year over the opening five days, before the Freestyle fleets hit the water for the first time this year.
