Fly! ANA Yokosuka, Miura Windsurf World Cup

Event Summary: Matteo Iachino & Justine Lemeteyer crowned champions of the world, while Johan Søe and Blanca Alabau claim respective event titles as Japan provides thrilling finale to 2025 PWA World Tour

After a slow opening couple of days the 2025 Fly! ANA Yokosuka, Miura Windsurf World Cup eventually burst into life from Day 3 onwards, while the last day saw one of the craziest days ever on the World Tour with the drama unfolding being hard to believe. In the end, four eliminations for the Men and five eliminations for the Men were completed, which saw Blanca Alabau (Starboard / Severne Sails) and Johan Søe (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) claim the respective event victories, while Matteo Iachino (Starboard / Severne Sails) deservedly claimed a third world title and Justine Lemeteyer (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) survived an absolute rollercoaster of a last day to pick up a second world crown.

Foil Slalom

Women’s

Justine Lemeteyer (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) had to survive a rollercoaster of a last day in Japan in terms of both performance and emotions. The 23-year-old made a flying start to the event as she recorded two bullets in the opening two races and looked to have the world title more or less wrapped up heading into the final day. However, things quickly deteriorated on the last day, as several uncharacteristic mistakes threatened to derail her chances of securing a second world title. However, in the end, Lemeteyer escaped just about unscathed as she was eventually crowed the 2025 Women’s Foil Slalom PWA World Champion.

Blanca Alabau (WeOne / Severne Sails) ends the season on a real high after winning the last elimination of the event to claim her first event victory since July 2023. The Spaniard looked much more like the sailor who won the 2023 world title - displaying excellent top speed and her no fear approach to earn the top spot on the podium, which sees her end 2025 as the vice-world champion.

Lina Eržen (Starboard / S2Maui / Starboard Foil) suffered heartbreak in the last elimination of the event as at one stage it looked as though she was on course to win Elimination 5, the event and the world title, but a costly crash on the penultimate reach saw her chances of success fade. Eržen completes the overall podium for 2025, but is emerging as a genuine world title contender for years to come.

After a staggering last day, that no one in their right mind could’ve predicted, all three women finished level on 20,100 points, but Lemeteyer came out on top, by the skin of her teeth, on countback.

Meanwhile, Femke van der Veen (Starboard / Severne Sails) and Mae Davico (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) complete the overall top five, while Bobbi-Lynn De Jong finishes sixth.

Men’s

Matteo Iachino’s (Starboard / Severne Sails) perfect start to the season in Guadeloupe gave the Italian a great foundation on which to build upon on his quest for a third world title and he duly delivered - both in Germany and here in Japan - to be crowed the 2025 Men’s Foil Slalom PWA World Champion. Iachino always looked like he had a bit extra in the tank this season when he needed it and sailed at an incredibly high level all season - only finishing outside the top three on three occasions over the course of the year to deservedly earn a third world title.

Johan Søe (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) continues to sail at machine like levels after winning all four eliminations here in Japan. The Dane not only won every single elimination, but also every single heat he sailed over the last five days and he truly looks like a frightening proposition for years to come as he is just so methodical and clinical. Søe’s wait for a maiden world title goes on after missing the opening event of the season in Guadeloupe, but the 22-year-old has now won the last four events he has entered.

Pierre Mortefon (FMX Racing / NeilPryde) finishes the 2025 season as the vice-world champion after completing the event podium here. When you take into account all of the trials and tribulations the Frenchman has had during the summer regarding his equipment - it’s testament to Mortefon’s mindset that he was still able to retain his Slalom X world title and give Iachino a good run for his money to cap another highly successful season.

Maciek Rutkowski (JP / NeilPryde) completes the prestigious overall podium for 2025 with the Pole finishing one place better than in 2024 after another fine season

Amado Vrieswijk (Future Fly / Point-7 / Z Foils) walks away from 2025 with a fourth overall after recording two fifths and an eighth, but there’s no doubt the Bonairean would’ve been hoping to be challenging for the world title.

Meanwhile, William Huppert (PATRIK / PATRIK Sails / PATRIK Foils) completes the overall top five. The Frenchman earns his best result since 2021 - when he finished third - and raced solidly all season with three top ten finishes.

Having earned his first overall podium in Slalom X earlier this summer, Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing) claims his best Foil Slalom finish to date - 6th overall - as the flying Dutchman continues his upward trajectory.

Emerging Talent

Three out of this year’s overall top ten are 24 or below as the next generation of racers start to make their mark on the World Tour. France’s Alexis Mathis (Tabou / GA Sails) (23) is the highest ranked in seventh, closely followed by the UK’s Scotty Stallman (Tabou / GA Sails) (24) - 8th - and Greece’s John Soukos (WeOne / Challenger Sails / PATRIK Foils) (21), who completes the top ten. For Stallman and Soukos, this is the first time in their careers that they have broken into the overall top ten.

As the sun sets on the 2025 PWA World Tour, we’d like to once again extend our thanks to all the organisers and volunteers who make these events possible. We look forward to returning in 2026. For now we wish you plenty of wind and waves wherever you are in the world. Take care and see you in 2025
