Jordy Vonk (Duotone Windsurfing) had his best season to date on the PWA World Tour in 2025 - achieving his first overall podium on the World Tour in Slalom X (3rd), while he also recorded his best result on the Foil too - 6th. While things are progressing nicely on the racecourse, Vonk, smartly, also had one eye on the future, which will involve a new venture for him, which you can read more about below:
Hey Jordy, congrats on the announcement of your new venture… what made now the right time?
“It’s an opportunity that came on my path during the PWA Tenerife last year. We’ve had talks if I was interested in stepping into this venture and basically discussed it for about 7 months. I think the way we do it, where my role in the next years becomes bigger and bigger, is a perfect way to still combine it with competing on the PWA Tour. Because I’m not finished on tour yet!”
What are some of the things that make Tenerife so special to you?
“It’s honestly a place where I feel at home, which mostly comes from the vibes I’m getting in El Médano. It’s windy almost every day, because usually if there’s no wind in El Medano, there’s wind on the other side of the island. It’s amazing to do other sports like biking as well. The climate is basically comfortable the whole year round and to see my sons growing up on the beach I believe is really something nice for them.”
What the latest update with the TWS Training now? In October of last year TWS announced that it had had to be postponed due to you not being allowed to be able to use buoys… is that something that may be resolved in the future?
“Yes it’s currently forbidden to use anchors in the water, so only electric buoys would be allowed. As the TWS wasn’t sure it’s doable on that notice to organise it with electric buoys for a reasonable price they decided to cancel the training. We’ll now have a closer look again for upcoming winter, to see if we find a way to make it happen again, but hard to tell at this point. My motivation is there to make it happen for sure.”
How has that affected your own training and other pros who live there?
“I’ve not done a single start since PWA Japan, so in that case it obviously affected me a lot, same for Matteo/Maciek/Nico who were there the whole winter. On the other side, timing wise for me it wasn’t too bad. With my second son Matty being only 5 months old when we arrived on Tenerife + everything happening around the centres, it was a lot going on off the water anyway.
The good thing is that since mid-February it was windy almost every single day, so despite not having a proper organised training, I could be on the water for a short session almost all the time, which felt great!”
With your new role how do you think that will affect your training (if at all) and what will a typical day look like?
“We’ll be moving with the whole family to Tenerife end of August and we’re really looking forward. I actually think it will create a lot more water time for me as the last 6 years have been very up/down in terms of conditions in Austria. When my wife saw me getting to nervous she kicked me out of the house sometimes to drive 3/4 days to Garda to train a bit ;-).” "So living full time in El Médano I think will even improve my training and I will mix the days up between being around in the centres/shop, working on the computer on the background and spend some time on the water. Probably the dream combination.”
Will you still be hosting your own coaching clinics in Tenerife? When are the next ones and how can people find out more and also book?
“Definitely! I will probably do more of them. The last 5 years I had a dedicated slalom week, I’m planning to do more of them also with other topics, more freeride/freerace orientated. All of those will be visible on the TWS/DPC website and on my own one www.jordyvonk.com, which will be updated soon again :)."
How excited are you for this new venture?
“Extremely excited, I’m feeling very comfortable in the fact that my future is clear now. Whenever people ask me what I will do after my career, I have an answer now. To be working inside the windsurfing world, also when I would stop as a professional rider on tour, makes me a very lucky guy.”
Goals for the upcoming year?
“Slalom X World Champion!
It will be extremely tough of course with guys like Pierre/Matteo and many more as hungry as they still are, but I think after finishing 3rd last year I should always aim higher and simply go for the title.”
