The 38th edition of the Gran Canaria Gloria Windsurf World Cup officially came to an end last Sunday, July 12, 2026, in Pozo Izquierdo after nine intense days dedicated exclusively to the wave discipline. The event, ranked at the very top of the World Wave Tour with its highest five-star classification, concluded at 7:00 p.m. with the official closing ceremony held at the Gloria Palace San Agustín Hotel.
The ceremony marked the presentation of the official awards and confirmed both the sporting and organisational success of an event that once again brought together the world's best windsurfers in what is widely regarded as the "Home of the Wind."
Recognition For The Competitors
The closing ceremony was attended by Julio Ojeda, Councillor for Sports in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, together with representatives from Gloria Palace Hotel, Monte Feliz-powered by Playitas, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. Joining the institutional and business representatives was windsurfing legend and event director Björn Dunkerbeck, who oversaw the technical organisation of the competition along Gran Canaria's coastline.
During the ceremony, organisers presented an extensive review of the event, highlighting both the athletes' outstanding performances and the excellent work carried out by the organising team despite the changing weather conditions experienced throughout this year's edition, which did nothing to diminish the spectacular nature of the competition.
"It has been a week with challenging conditions at times, but thanks to smart decision-making and everyone's goodwill, we managed to complete all the categories of this international event as well as the Spanish Cup. We are very pleased with the participants' spirit and determination," said Dunkerbeck.
From a sporting perspective, the World Cup fully lived up to the high expectations generated since the official opening. Throughout the nine days of competition, the Pro Men's and Women's divisions, together with the youth Under-13, Under-15, Under-18 and Under-21 categories, the professional fleet, and the Master’s (+45) and Grand Master’s (+55) divisions, made the most of Pozo Izquierdo's demanding wind conditions.
This year's WWT/PWA competition was further enhanced by the simultaneous staging of the Spanish Cup within the framework of the World Cup itself. This synergy allowed Spanish riders to measure themselves directly against the world's elite on the sport's most demanding international stage, fostering the development of both the Canary Islands' and Spain's emerging talents on the very same waters where the discipline's reigning champions compete.
