PWA/IWT Cold Hawaii Youth Windsurf World Cup 2023

Day 4: Competition switches to ‘The Reef’ in Klitmøller as Sol Degrieck, Peter Gobisch and Mika Henning claim respective victories in Girl’s U20s, Boy’s U15s & U13s

The first three days of the 2023 PWA/IWT Cold Hawaii Youth Windsurf World Cup 2023 had seen the competition taking place at the Fish Factory in Hanstholm, however, with a change in the wind direction for Day 4 the decision was made to switch location to ‘The Reef’ in Klitmøller - conditions were tricky a strong current on the inside and only a light cross-onshore wind making life difficult.

U15 Boy’s

The U15 Boy’s armed themselves with 75+ litre boards and sails between 4.0-4.7m, whilst they were given 12 minutes to try and produce their top two wave scores, so wave selection was absolutely paramount to succeed.

It was a final battle we have seen many times before as Peter Gobisch (Duotone / Duotone Sails) lined-up against Javi Escribano (Goya Windsurfing). In the end, Gobisch secured victory in the single elimination after linking together an excellent 9 point wave ride.

After the completion of the single, the conditions improved which allowed us to run straight into the Double Elimination. With the wind increasing, Bjørn Olesen (Severne / Severne Sails) started to gather a bit of momentum as the young Dane won three consecutive heats to advance into the top two and setup a final against - Peter Gobisch. Gobisch stole the lead early on and never looked like relinquishing it as he deservedly walks away from this year’s contest as the U15 Boy’s Cold Hawaii Champion, while the podium is completed by Olesen and Escribano - followed by Emil Skov Nielsen (Simmer).

U13 Boy’s

With boys from 8-12 years old, these kids are the future and some impressive skills were on show! 12-year-old Mika Henning (Ezzy) beat 10 year old Anton Gobisch (Duotone / Duotone Sails) in the final! Conditions were tricky in the final with only light winds, while sometimes it was only possible to ride the whitewater. However, Henning was able to catch a wave on the outside and combine both front and backside turns to secure the victory.

Girl’s U20

A name that’s been challenging in the main fleet this year, 14-year-old Sol Degrieck (Severne / Severne Sails) was in superb form again this morning as the young Belgian earned another Youth World Title after defeating Emma Miron (Sailloft Hamburg) in the U20 Girl’s Final.

In the Double Elimination, Trine Gobisch (Duotone / Duotone Sails) made an incredible comeback, which saw her take down Smilla Petersen (Duotone / Duotone Sails), Runa Krabbenhöft (Goya Windsurfing) and Frida Miron (Sailloft Hamburg) in some difficult conditions. However, Emma Miron, then stopped her in her tracks leaving Gobisch to settle for a solid third place, while Emma Miron finished behind Sol Degrieck, after the 14-year-old successfully defended her single elimination crown.

With results now gained across all age categories, Day 5 will see all the winners’ crowned with the official prize giving ceremony being held at 11am, while the NASA Club House will be open for those who would like to borrow a surfboard to enjoy the waves.
