Day 3: The Youths undergo a firm test as the wind increases to 20-25 knots as Aruba continues to deliver

Day 3 saw the 2024 Aruba Hi Winds Youth Slalom World Cup lived up to its name as winds of 20-25 knots greeted competitors. After a couple of lighter wind days, today gave the youths a real test of their mettle, but there were a bunch of familiar names at the top of the rankings come the end of the day despite the different conditions.

Fin

Girl’s

Bobbi-Lynn De Jong (Starboard / NeilPryde) was consistent once again and consolidated her place at the top of the girls rankings, however, the battle between her 12-year-old twin sisters is definitely on as they enter the last day tied on points! Lone De Jong (Starboard / NeilPryde) pipped Kit De Jong (Starboard / NeilPryde) twice today, but with Kit being the stronger of the two in the opening days, there is nothing but countback separating them, whilst only one point separates the twins and Louise van der Meulen, so it’s safe to say that there is all to play for heading into the final day tomorrow for the prestigious podium places.

Boy’s

Brendan Lorho (FMX Racing / Point-7) continues to dominate the fins division after securing two bullets from both fin races completed today. Lorho now opens up 5.2 point lead at the top of the rankings and with only a day to go it looks unlikely anyone will be able to stop him - barring any disaster.

Storm Nicolai (Duotone) continued to impress as the young Bonairean finished second in both races today to back up his maiden bullet yesterday. That sees Nicolai ranked second in the overall rankings despite competing in the U17s as he continues to sail beyond his years.

The top three is currently competed by Tycho Smits, who is also competing in the U17s division, but he only has a 3.7 point margin error heading into the final day, so he can’t afford any mistakes if he wants to secure the final place on the podium.

The rider of the day, however, was undoubtably 12-year-old Arxon Gomperts, who scored his best results of the contest so far with a 4th and 5th place - which sees him fly up to 7th place in the overalls!

Foil

Girl’s

Bobbi-Lynn De Jong looks on course to complete a fin and foil double with the Bonairean sailing extremely consistently on the foil. Bobbi-Lynn leads Louise van der Meulen by 7 points, while she is 12 points ahead of her sister - Kit, who completes the top 3.

Boy’s

Today was once again dominated by Benedikt Emser (PATRIK), who is improving with each day that goes by. The young German produced a near faultless performance on Day 3 with his only mistake being a catapult two metres before the finish line in the first race. However, after that he didn’t put a single finger wrong, dominating every race by a considerable margin to open up a 5.2 point advantage at the top of the rankings. Emser has won 5 out of the 7 foil eliminations thus far and has not finished outside the top two once. Brendan Lorho is Emser’s closest challenger, while the top three is completed by Tycho Smits.
